Ebasco Environment conducted an enhanced preliminary assessment (PA) of the Navajo Depot Activity (NADA), Bellemont, AZ. The objectives included identifying and characterizing areas requiring environmental evaluation (AREEs), identifying areas or operations that may require a site investigation, immediate remedial action, or no additional investigation, and identifying other actions necessary to address and resolve all known environmental problems and concerns that may be present impediments to the expeditious transfer of all or parts of this property. This PA relied on information readily available from previous studies, outside agencies, and NADA files. AREEs are discussed according to type of operation. Conclusions are drawn about known suspected releases to soils, groundwater, surface water, and air. Areas of no known environmental problems are shown. Recommendations are made concerning additional investigations needed to resolve issues of concern at several AREEs. Past studies have reported groundwater and/or soil contamination in areas associated with Ammunition Workshops, Ammunition Demolition Areas, the former Landfill, and underground fuel storage. A closure action is presently underway for the Ammunition Deactivation Furnace and its associated ash pile. A small drum disposal site is recommended for prompt action. (jhd).

The Navajo Ordnance Depot, later known as Camp Navajo, was constructed in 1942 as part of the Protective Mobilization Program, designed to decentralize the storage of munitions. After World War II, the facility remained open and assumed the mission of disposing of out-dated and unserviceable ammunition. Today, it is a multi-service training facility open to all branches of the military and to the Arizona National Guard.
