DOWNLOAD EBOOKLa industria nanotecnológica está considerada como uno de los vectores de crecimiento económico más importantes de las últimas décadas. Su reciente aparición ha dado lugar a que sea definida como una segunda revolución industrial. Los productos de la nanotecnología, los nanomateriales, presentan propiedades extraordinarias en comparación con los materiales macroscópicos de idéntica composición. Estas propiedades son producto fundamentalmente de su pequeña dimensión y del incremento significativo de su superficie específica. Los nanomateriales pueden tener cualquier tipo de composición química, y pueden presentarse en diferentes formas estructurales, en base a estos conceptos, pueden ser utilizados en un amplio abanico de aplicaciones industriales y estar presentes en un gran número de productos. No obstante, las mismas características que les dotan de su gran valor en el mercado, son objeto de preocupación por su posible efecto toxicológico. Interfieren con los tejidos biológicos de una forma diferente a como lo hacen partículas de tamaño mayor. Eso crea una justificada preocupación para la salud de las personas y el medio ambiente. El estudio de la nanotoxicología, si bien ha demostrado la potencial toxicidad de los nanomateriales, no ofrece en la actualidad una base de conocimiento suficiente para la realización de estudios cuantitativos de evaluación del riesgo, que permitan establecer planes rigurosos de prevención y protección de la salud. Los métodos de evaluación existentes están basados en aproximaciones cualitativas de acuerdo con el principio de precaución, y las medidas de protección disponibles están diseñadas en base a problemáticas de carácter análogo como, por ejemplo, la exposición a partículas finas. No obstante, la eficiencia de las mismas frente a nanomateriales no está del todo demostrada. El desarrollo de la industria nanotecnológica ha sido especialmente intenso en la última década, no obstante, la creación de una base de conocimiento encaminado a establecer políticas reglamentarias adecuadas no ha seguido el mismo ritmo. De hecho en la actualidad, no se dispone de una legislación armonizada ni en términos de mercado global, ni a nivel de mercado europeo. La creación de una legislación apropiada y operativa, que propicie el desarrollo sostenible de la nanotecnología es el principal reto al que se enfrentan los gobiernos y la industria del sector.
