Sweater shop owner Paislee Shaw puts the yarn in Nairn, but a killer has put poison in some Scottish shortbread cookies . . . Opening her shop Cashmere Crush and making a new home for herself, her son Brody, Gramps, and their black Scottish terrier Wallace in the beautiful Scottish village of Nairn is a dream come true. So Paislee is happy to give back by donating a luxurious cashmere sweater for an auction to raise money for the Nairn Food Bank. She’s less happy to make the acquaintance of a clique of competitive moms at the charity event, who treat a baking contest like it’s life or death. It turns out to be the latter for Queen Bee Kirsten Buchanan when a peanut-laced shortbread cookie triggers her fatal nut allergy. Who would poison Kirsten? How about half the town? But when Paislee’s pal Blaise is suspected, the sweater-selling sleuth leaps into action to unravel the mystery. Along with gruff but handsome DI Mack Zeffer, she has to sort through a batch of suspects without becoming this cookie-cutter killer’s next target . . .

Known as the Brighton of the North, Nairn is both a charming Scottish town and a popular seaside resort—but to Paislee Shaw, it's simply home—unfortunately to a murderer . . . For a twenty-eight-year-old single mum, Paislee has knit together a sensible life for herself, her ten-year-old son Brody, and Wallace, their black Scottish terrier. Having inherited a knack for knitting from her dear departed grandmother, Paislee also owns a specialty sweater shop called Cashmere Crush, where devoted local crafters gather weekly for her Knit and Sip. Lately, though, Paislee feels as if her life is unraveling. She’s been served an eviction notice, and her estranged and homeless grandfather has just been brought to her door by a disconcertingly handsome detective named Mack Zeffer. As if all that wasn't enough, Paislee discovers a young woman who she recently rehired to help in the shop dead in her flat, possibly from an overdose of her heart medicine. But as details of the death and the woman’s life begin to raise suspicions for Detective Inspector Zeffer, it’s Paislee who must untangle a murderous yarn . . .

A clique of rich women make life so miserable for someone that it leads to murder. Paislee Shaw, owner of Cashmere Crush in Nairn, Scotland, is all for a peaceful life raising her son and knitting, but an invitation to a fundraiser for the local food bank involves her in yet another murder. Paislee packs her wares and goes to join several friends sharing a table at the recently renovated Social Club and Art Centre, including her newest friend, Blaise O'Connor, who's well off and devoted to her husband, Shep, the pro at the local golf course. Blaise is verbally attacked by the nasty alpha mom Kirsten Buchanan, whose husband helped Shep get his job and knows a lot of secrets she isn't afraid to spill. The day features a lot of backbiting between Kirsten and her sycophants, Mari, who's bulimic, and Christina, who drinks. Sales go well until the ill-fated baking contest: When Kirsten tastes her own shortbread before presenting it to the judges, she goes into anaphylactic shock--and her EpiPens are missing. Despite Paislee's best efforts at CPR, Kirsten dies. Kirsten had a severe peanut allergy well known to all her friends, but the personal chef she'd just fired is the prime suspect. Paislee thinks he's innocent and hopes to convince her attractive nemesis, DI Mack Zeffer, of that fact, when she isn't busy dealing with her son being bullied and her loyal dog.

Previously unavailable archival sources reveal the socially disruptive impact of the First World War in Scotland. While a great deal has been written on Scotland and the First World War, the question of how it affected criminality has been underexplored. Although mass enlistment reduced offending drastically, servicemen based in Scotland continued to commit offences - whilst some crimes, such as bigamy, actually rose during the war. After demobilisation, which saw crime rise again, fears over "brutalisation" created a belief that Scotland was a more violent place than before the war. By analysing criminal statistics from 1909 to 1926, drawn from previously unavailable archival sources, prison registers, anonymous interviews, newspapers and legal proceedings, this book argues that the First World War had a socially disruptive impact on Scotland, evident in abnormal crime patterns during and after the war. Covering categories of offence from murder and culpable homicide to lesser felonies, such as theft and fraud, it discusses how contemporary notions around class, gender and respectability shaped the perception of crimes committed by ex-servicemen. It also looks at whether the war had a disruptive influence on law and order by desensitising society and through psychological damage to a generation of men, examining such commonalities as alcoholism, family breakdown, health problems and unemployment, and the prevalence of domestic violence and spousal homicide.
