This book examines distributed video coding (DVC) and multiple description coding (MDC), two novel techniques designed to address the problems of conventional image and video compression coding. Covering all fundamental concepts and core technologies, the chapters can also be read as independent and self-sufficient, describing each methodology in sufficient detail to enable readers to repeat the corresponding experiments easily. Topics and features: provides a broad overview of DVC and MDC, from the basic principles to the latest research; covers sub-sampling based MDC, quantization based MDC, transform based MDC, and FEC based MDC; discusses Sleplian-Wolf coding based on Turbo and LDPC respectively, and comparing relative performance; includes original algorithms of MDC and DVC; presents the basic frameworks and experimental results, to help readers improve the efficiency of MDC and DVC; introduces the classical DVC system for mobile communications, providing the developmental environment in detail.

This PhD thesis provides a new ways of looking multiple description method (MDC). We propose a robust joint source channel MDC method that is adapted to the transmission of images and videos on non stationary channels. The main advantage of this method is that it is well adapted for applications implying transmissions using unreliable and variable channels. Moreover, for its compression and synchronization capabilities it is appropriate for real time transmissions. We show that the proposed method present the best results, in terms of signal to noise ration and of visual quality, when compared with other multiple description methods existing in the state of the art. Moreover, it is well adapted for applications where the standard method of error control cannot easily adapt to the characteristics of the channel. The method is validated on various channel models (BSC, AWGN, Internet, UMTS, satellite) when considering image and video transmissions. The proposed MDBA is well adapted for application demanding a feedback-based encoder, as peer-to-peer video conferencing, wireless video, etc. But it is insufficient in a real video streaming system where the server may be a serving thousand of clients simultaneously. It is that the reason why we develop a system based in the MDBA but dedicated to video streaming. The last chapter of this dissertation presents an extension of the MDBA method to make streaming video robust to channel errors. The proposed method is rate adaptable, at the actual commercial methods, and it is also quality adaptable that is presented in the literature as an important characteristic of video streaming systems

ICIAR 2005, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, was the second ICIAR conference, and was held in Toronto, Canada. ICIAR is organized annually, and alternates between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2004 was held in Porto, Portugal. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. TheresponsetothecallforpapersforICIAR2005wasencouraging.From295 full papers submitted, 153 were ?nally accepted (80 oral presentations, and 73 posters). The review process was carried out by the Program Committee m- bersandotherreviewers;allareexpertsinvariousimageanalysisandrecognition areas. Each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers, and also checked by the conference co-chairs. The high quality of the papers in these proceedings is attributed ?rst to the authors, and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts. We would like to thank the authors for responding to our call, andwewholeheartedlythankthe reviewersfor theirexcellentwork, andfortheir timely response. It is this collective e?ort that resulted in the strong conference program and high-quality proceedings in your hands.

Multimedia Communications is at the core of the advanced interactive services that make up today's Information Society. Videoconferencing, teleworking, teleshopping and video-on-demand will benefit from developments in broadband and mobile telecommunication systems, intelligent multimedia terminals and digital signal processing. The latest research findings from these fields are presented here in the proceedings of the 10th Tyrrhenian Workshop on Digital Communications, held in Ischia, Italy, September 19 98. Focus is placed on the following four areas: Signal Processing for Multimedia Communications. Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Multimedia Traffic Sources. Access Techniques. Multimode Multimedia Terminals. In particular, multimedia services and applications are presented. This comprehensive collection of papers will enable the reader to keep pace with the rapid changes that are taking place in this field. Experts have co-operated with top research centers worldwide, on an academic and industrial level, to make this an up-to-date reference volume for all those who are concerned with technological advances in Multimedia Distributed Systems.

A discussion of a compressed-domain approach for designing and implementing digital video coding systems, which is drastically different from the traditional hybrid approach. It demonstrates how the combination of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coders and motion compensated (MC) units reduces power consumption and hardware complexity.
