It was August 9, 2015, still dark in the early hours of a cool Autumn Sunday morning. I was eager and excited about my second ride into the Maritimes with the route including both Newfoundland and Labrador, the two provinces I missed on my first visit. On my last ride there, while conversing with a total stranger in Nova Scotia, it seemed to me that I had been more than cordially invited but almost contracted to make this trip. Although it seemed very strange to me at the time, such was his influence. While on the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Argentia, Newfoundland, through the long dark hours of the night, a strange and haunting incident occurred. I healed from the physical injury of the incident in a few days, but mentally it proved to be a different matter. I had to share this in order to move forward. This was my inspiration to write this book. It is a work based almost entirely on my daily journal entries but also includes some fiction. While continuing on my ride, I began a lengthy healing process with the help of a very strange visitor. I am happy to say that today, this whole adventure is filed away safely in a good place. I find myself longing for yet one more visit.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge is an endurance ride that takes participants across the United States. Riding 20 hours a day or more for 7-12 days straight, they traverse back roads, brave dangerous conditions and battle mental and physical exhaustion. Fewer than 10 percent of participants are women. They take on the challenge and they excel! Chronicling the journeys of 14 women who participated in the Hoka Hey (Lakota for "Let's do it!") from 2010 to 2013, this feminist cultural analysis relates their often harrowing stories of life on the road and draws comparisons to women in other sports.

A hybrid machine--powered at times by steam, electricity or internal combustion--the motorcycle in its infancy was an innovation to help bicycle racers go faster. As motor age technology advanced, the quest for greater speed at the velodrome peaked, with riders reaching speeds up to 100 kph on bikes and trikes without brakes, suspensions or gear boxes. This book chronicles the individuals and events at the turn of the 20th century that led to the development of motor-powered two-wheelers.

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER A shocking exposé of the deadliest killing spree in Canadian history, and how police tragically failed its victims and survivors. As news broke of a killer rampaging across the tiny community of Portapique, Nova Scotia, late on April 18, 2020, details were oddly hard to come by. Who was the killer? Why was he not apprehended? What were police doing? How many were dead? And why was the gunman still on the loose the next morning and killing again? The RCMP was largely silent then, and continued to obscure the actions of denturist Gabriel Wortman after an officer shot and killed him at a gas station during a chance encounter. Though retired as an investigative journalist and author, Paul Palango spent much of his career reporting on Canada’s troubled national police force. Watching the RCMP stumble through the Portapique massacre, only a few hours from his Nova Scotia home, Palango knew the story behind the headlines was more complicated and damning than anyone was willing to admit. With the COVID-19 lockdown sealing off the Maritimes, no journalist in the province knew the RCMP better than Palango did. Within a month, he was back in print and on the radio, peeling away the layers of this murderous episode as only he could, and unearthing the collision of failure and malfeasance that cost a quiet community 22 innocent lives.
