Excerpt from Modern Democracies, Vol. 1 of 2 The book is not meant to propound theories. Novelties are not possible in a subject the literature of which began with Plato and Aristotle and has been enriched by thousands of pens since their day. What I desire is, not to impress upon my readers views of my own, but to supply them with facts, and (so far as I can) with explanations of facts on which they can reflect and from which they can draw their own conclusions. Excerpt from Democracy, Vol. 1 of 2: In America Inpresenting the translation of this work to the public, preceded by an Introduction in which the author calls the attention of the reader to the present social state of France, I may perhaps be allowed to say a few words on the inferences which are to be drawn from the democratic in stitutions of America relative to our own political condition. We live at a time when so many of the maxims of government are worn out, that in casting our eyes upon the aphorisms of the great statesmen of Europe, we are astonished to find that the authority they attempted to defend is vanished, and the principles by which they de fended it are no more. The book of The Prince' is closed for ever as a State manual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Democracy, Vol. 5: A Study in Tendencies Only a few words of explanation require to be said in introducing this book. It must not be inferred from the slight references made to the Irish party that I do not sympathise to the full with the Nationalist movement. The democracy of Ireland has set a noble example to our slower moving peoples on this side of the water, and nothing seems more certain than that the coming of Home Rule will be the prelude to a far more rapid advance in Ireland than anything we have experienced in the past. The progress of Ireland has been delayed, not by the Irish themselves, but by us. But the problem of Irish self-government should have been solved fifty years ago. In itself, it is a problem of the type facing politicians in the days of purely political Liberalism. As such it is not typical of the modern struggle, which is the true subject matter of this book. Thus it was no part of my task to develop the point of view which led the Nationalists into the Coalition, and I have dealt almost entirely with the other two bodies concerned - Liberalism and Labour.
