J., October, 1911; With Appendix His theological course was pursued at Auburn Seminary. He was ordained and served under Home Board in Colorado for one year, 1868, when he was called to the Union Springs Presbyterian Church. Following his work at Union Springs, he served the First Church of Utica for four years, and later the church of Ilion for a similar period. In 1883 the Memorial Presbyterian Church of Newark, N. I, in the absence of a pastor, secured Mr. Lyle as supply. In 1892 he took charge of the First Church Tabernacle, of Newark, where for thirteen years he labored with zeal and fidelity, when failing health forced him to retire from active service. The life and ministry of this servant of God was marked by rare uniformity, unselfish conse cration, devotion and loyalty to God and His word, and Christ and His gospel. In the closing year of his life, the University of California conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws.
