Migrants who are more segregated have group mobilization resources to achieve economic and political success. Migrants who are more assimilated have fewer mobilization resources and worse economic and political outcomes. The book offers a unique perspective on why migrant groups have different integration outcomes, and provides the first systematic way of understanding why assimilation outcomes do not always match economic and political outcomes.

The deliberate devaluation of Blacks and their communities has had very real, far-reaching, and negative economic and social effects. An enduring white supremacist myth claims brutal conditions in Black communities are mainly the result of Black people's collective choices and moral failings. “That's just how they are” or “there's really no excuse”: we've all heard those not so subtle digs.
