"Chapters within "The Fungi" bring up to date the nomenclature and classification of species, accurately reflecting the phylogeny of the fungi. An entire chapter is dedicated to the taxonomy of the powdery mildew fungi providing a new and reliable international source for all mycologists and plant pathologists. Convenient reference to both 'old' and 'new' names throughout the book will facilitate understanding and accelerate transition towards general use of the new taxonomy and nomenclature."--pub. desc.

Does your mother-in-law still buy your husband underwear? Show up at your home unannounced? Do you keep hoping that aliens will kidnap her? If so, you must have MILDEW! MILDEW, the playful acronym for Mothers-In-Law Do Everything Wrong, has allowed authors Liz Bluper and Renee Plastique to conduct covert conversations about their MILDEWs for the last decade--without drawing the ire of their husbands. As humorous stories accumulated over the years, they began to broaden their MILDEW storytelling circle. Soon, that circle spanned the globe, resulting in the first-ever truly fun humor book on mothers-in-law. From the all-too-revealing quiz to the laugh-out-loud stories to the Hey, that really might work strategies, this book gives new meaning to the word MILDEW. MILDEW gave me a Thigh Master for Christmas one year. --Margot, Connecticut When I was pregnant with my first child, a son, MILDEW wanted us to name him after her husband, Ken. My husband and I, however, decided to name our son Jacob. MILDEW refused to accept this, and proceeded to call our son Ken. What's up with that? --Gretchen, Maine Running the gamut from famous MILDEWs--such as the queen of England--to everyday MILDEWs just like yours, this witty insightful book transcends age, gender, culture, geography, and time. The hysterical tales of holiday chaos, helpful child-rearing advice, pre-wedding moments of horror, and MILDEW gift giving gone awry will keep you laughing and dying to share it with your friends.

Knowledge of downy mildew pathogens and diseases has increased significantly in taxonomy, phylogeny, genetics, molecular biology, host-parasite interactions, ecology, epidemiology and control. The opportunity to update comprehensively the major advances in these areas was created by the 2nd International Symposium on Downy Mildews held in July 2007 at Olomouc (Czech Republic). Keynote contributions from this meeting are published here in 14 chapters that provide the most authoritative and recent analysis of these biotrophic plant pathogens and their interactions with plants. It will be an invaluable resource to students and researchers in plant pathology, mycology, taxonomy, plant biology and crop protection.

Curious biological phenomena occur where land and sea alternate at low and high tides. Large crop-like populations of the perennial sea lavender (Limonium vulgare) appear and disappear over the years. Such vegetations are of great beauty, especially at bloom, and form a tourist attraction. Despite the extreme physical conditions they teem with life, among which are fertilising insects and fungi which cause plant disease. This book describes how long-lived sea lavender populations come and go, and how the fungal diseases "rust" and "mildew" may contribute to their going. The temporal and spatial distributions of rust and mildew epidemics are described. The annual cycle and the perennation of the rust (Uromyces limonii) are studied in detail. The unusual but important roles of sea water in the dispersal of the host plant and of its rust are sketched. The possible function of differential host resistance and of differential rust virulence is indicated. Data on the biology of sea lavender mildew (Erysiphe limonii) suggest that mildew and rust differ in lifestyle. Tolerance of sea lavender plants to rust and mildew is heritable and important, but does it last forever? Some theoretical implications for botany and phytopathology are tentatively discussed, especially the role of equilibrium or homoeostasis. However, the main focus of the book is on the facts collected in the salt marshes of the barrier island Terschelling, in the north of the Netherlands. This book with about 100 tables and some 100 figures provides new information of importance to botanists, plant pathologists, population biologists and general ecologists.
