In 1692 Purcell produced music to eight or nine plays, including The Indian Queen, with the recitative Ye twice ten hundred deities, described by Burney as perhaps the best piece of recitative in our language, and the beautiful rondo, I attempt from love's sickness to fly. Among other compositions of this year was Sir Charles Sedley's Ode for the Queen's Birthday, beginning Love's goddess, in which Purcell introduces the air of the popular but not very proper song.
