Excerpt from Method in History: For Teachers and Students To state the matter negatively, the aim has not been to discuss devices and external manipulations in teaching history; the term method is not even intended to suggest diagrams, chronological charts, or expedients of like nature. But something far more fundamental has been the aim: the determining factors in method and not the determined - the principal 'and not the accidental - ones have -been sought for and put to work at the problem. Whether diagrams, outlines, maps, and so on are to be, used in teaching history cannot be decided by the whim of the teacher or by some current fashion in teach ing the subject, but is to be decided, like other questions about devices and expedients, by an appeal to principles. Excerpt from The Teaching of History A practical teacher cannot avoid developing a certain bias in favour of some ideas and against others, but it has been attempted in this volume to present the case for each school of method with as much fairness as possible. No attempt has been made to produce a stereotyped syllabus or universal code of rules of method, as it is far too early to decide what will be the ultimate product of the very conspicuous reform movement which is at present in course of development among teachers of history. Excerpt from Methods of Teaching Biblical History: Junior Grade The teaching of Bible History to children of tender age is no longer the simple task it was for our fathers. Without knowing anything definitely, or in detail, of the tremendous revolution that has taken place in the intellectual and spiritual worlds during the past generation, the child of today none the less senses the change in the religious atmosphere. There are obstacles of doubt, laxness and parental indifference, with which the teacher of a former generation did not have to contend, but which render far more difficult the work of the teacher of today. In keeping with the general plan of the Correspondence School, this course is designed to aid the teacher to overcome these difficulties, by laying stress upon the primary purpose of Bible History instruction, i. e., the ethical import of the historical narrative. The writer has not undertaken to decide upon the historical accuracy of any of the Biblical narratives. His purpose was to show how to give the pupil a knowledge of the life of the people of Israel during that important formative period of its life, when it progressed from a loosely connected group of tribes to a compact entity, with an aroused sense of national unity and an earnest consciousness of religious purpose, giving the episodes of that progress, but having a spirit of reverence and a constant sense of God's guidance pervade them throughout. The course is not intended as a text book, but as a teacher's guide. The Lesson Material is given as illustration. Excerpt from The True Method of Studying and Teaching History: A Paper Read Before the American Association for the Advancement of Education, at Its Annual Session in the City of Albany, on the 5th August, 1857 The present mode of studying and teaching history seems to me far more unsatisfactory than that adopted in reference to any other branch of human knowledge. It is faulty in at least two important respects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Studies in Historical Method There are many people who, perhaps, without being ambitious to write books or become college professors, would like to be careful and special students and teachers of the subject of history. For them I write, and especially for the teacher who wishes to special ize his work, and to see the world from this particular point of view. For as the material world grows smaller, and time and space condense, our intellectual world grows greater, its points of view become more numerous, more unobstructed, and so much more extensive, that in order to have any point of view at all, or get on top of the earth in any direction, we must choose some particular height as our own; do the best we can, it will take a good part of life to attain any high outlook. Excerpt from Methods of Teaching Jewish History-Senior Grade It is the effort of the writer, in this volume, to bring out these facts in such manner that there may be realized the great truth that, while Israel is no less the chosen people Of God, Israel fulfills its destiny, not through miracles, but along perfectly natural lines. It is not intended that the thought Of God's guidance should in any way be minimized, but the great fact Of all history. Should be understood that God's guidance does not manifest itself in Ob j ective interposition, but in the courage and power to do, that come to those who seek counsel of Him, who perform their tasks in the light Of the Law and to whom the word of God is as a lamp unto their feet. Excerpt from A Syllabus of the History of Education The present volume is the outgrowth of several years' experience in the use of the syllabus method in teaching the history of education. The syllabi were originally prepared in a somewhat elaborate form for use in graduate classes at Yale University. The teaching method used in the course at, Yale combined extensive library reading with lectures. Subsequently the syllabi were revised and to some degree abridged for my classes in the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers, where they have been of service in directing and organizing the students' reading. They are now published in the belief that they will fill a wider field of usefulness in normal school and college classes.
