Excerpt from The Methods of Ethics I ought to mention that chapter iv. Of Book i. Has been reprinted (with considerable modifications) from the Contempo rary Review, in which it originally appeared as an article on Pleasure and Desire. And I cannot conclude without a tribute of thanks to my friend Mr. Venn, to whose kindness in accepting the somewhat laborious task of reading and criticising my work, both before and during its passage through the press, I am indebted for several improvements in my exposition. Excerpt from Methods of Ethics It is on account of the prevalence of the view just described, and the prominent place which it consequently occupies in my discussion, that in defining the subject of the present treatise I have avoided the term Art of Conduct'; which, to some writers, will appear the more appropriate designation for ethical method as I conceive it. Excerpt from Types of Ethical Theory, Vol. 1 These volumes would have appeared to more advantage had they been preceded, as originally designed, by a com pendium of logical psychology, presenting, in explicit form, the principles and processes of knowledge which are here assumed and implicitly operative throughout. Such a manual has been written and repeatedly re-written: but the literature of what is called Erketmtmlvsle/zre has so rapidly increased, that at last I am unable to overtake it I relinquish, therefore, the hope of adequately equipping my awnt - courzler for his mission. I consign the old herald to the superannuates' almshouse, and am content to let the Ethical Doctrine'introduce and explain itself. Excerpt from A Supplement to the Second Edition of the Methods of Ethics 1 (p. 1, l. An Objection is sometimes taken to the application of the term 'science' to such studies as these. It is said that a Science must necessarily have some department of actual existence for its subject-matter: and. There is no doubt that the term Ethical Science might, according to usage, denote studies that deal with the actually existent: viz. Either the department of Psychology that deals with pleasures and pains, desires and volitions, moral sentiments and judgments, as actual phenomena of individual human minds; or the department of Sociology dealing with similar phenomena, as exhibited by the larger organizations of which individual human beings are ele ments. We Observe, however, that comparatively few persons pursue these studies from pure curiosity, in order merely to ascertain what actually exists, has existed, or will exist in time. Most men wish not only to understand human action, but also to regulate it; they apply the ideas 'good' and 'bad, ' 'right' and 'wrong, ' to the conduct or institutions which they describe; and thus pass, as I should say, from the point of View. Of Psychology or Sociology to the point of View of Ethics or Politics. It is true that the mutual implication Of the two kinds of study is, on any theory, very close and complete, though the precise nature and extent of their connexion is. Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics The present work is designed as an introductory treatise upon the fundamental problems of theoretical ethics, and therefore to obtain standing ground from which to consider the practical questions that are affected by general principles. The book may seem rather an elaborate treatise for an introduction, but so great are the complications of ethical problems, so manifold are their interests, and so various have been opinions regarding them, that a writer to-day must choose between the perfunctory task of pro ducing a mere syllabus of words and the more important duty of saying enough to satisfy the wants of those who desire more than platitudes, and who wish some insight into the complexities of the case. The analysis of various questions has been made as complete as reasonable limits would allow, with the special pur pose Of trying to throw some light on the perplexities of ethical theories, and to present the author's conclusions regarding them. This purpose has involved a very exhaustive application of the analytic method, which may try the patience of those who desire synthetic and comprehensive results. But the writer is con vinced that we shall never get out of the wilderness of scholastic controversy and see-sawing with traditional theories until the analytic method is first carefully applied and our exact where abouts determined. We may then give a synthetic survey of the field without embroiling ourselves in the hocus - pocus of endless and futile discussions about 'words that may have a thousand meanings.
