Excerpt from Boston Latin School Register, Vol. 56 of 5: Christmas Number; December, 1936 Especially noticeable during the past few years have been the attempts on the part of certain public-spirited and zealous citizens, to repress undermining and tremendously detrimental activities of a few crackpot agitators. These good citizens express fears that such radicals will only too easily succeed in implanting their doc trines in the rash, immature minds of the youth of the country. On the surface, such an unselfish, fostering attitude would seem to be excellent and, granting that such menaces exist and that the younger generation is inexperienced and even foolhardy, also quite proper. And yet that is not the complete picture; certain basic elements and principles have been neglected. In the first place, it is not in accordance with the American system of democracy to attempt to repress things. The government itself is held in equilibrium by a series of balancing, counteracting forces. No matter what party or person or principle holds sway, despite the general acclaim for it, there is, and always must be, an opposing faction which stabilizes and points out the defects of the other's program. It is the basis of American life; each man brings his opinions and plans - his grist, to the public mill where it is thrashed out, assailed, and studied by his fellow-men from every point of view.
