These papers deal with various aspects of the histories of geomorphology and Quaternary geology in different parts of the world. They include: the origin of the term 'Quaternary', histories of ideas and debates relating to aspects of fluvial geomorphology, glacial geomorphology and glaciation, desert dunes and the geology of Australia, peneplains in China, a palaeo-Tokyo Bay in Japan, together with biographies of Charles Cotton, Valerija Čepulytė and Česlovas Pakuckas that highlight their respective contributions to the disciplines of geomorphology and Quaternary geology.

This book is the first of its kind on environmental change research devoted to monsoon-arid environment evolution history and its mechanism involved. Capturing the most prominent features of Asian climate and environmental changes, it gives a comprehensive review of the Asian Monsoon records providing evidence for spatial and temporal climatic and environmental changes across the Asian continent since the Late Cenozoic. The dynamics underlying these changes are explored based on various bio-geological records and in particular based on the evidence of loess, speleothems as well as on mammal fossils. The Asian monsoon-arid climate system which quantifies the controlling mechanisms of climate change and the way it operates in different time scales is described. Attempts to differentiate between natural change and human-induced effects, which will help guide policies and countermeasures designed to support sustainable development on the Chinese Loess Plateau and the arid west.

This book provides an important reference guide to pollen and spore identification for Chinese Quaternary palynological studies. Presenting and describing more than 400 color photomicrographs of pollen grains and spores retrieved from sediments in China, it offers a unique asset for researchers, graduate students, and newcomers to the field of Quaternary palynology, which constitutes a major aspect of Quaternary paleoecology, paleoclimatology, and paleogeography.

The fossil record of the Far East has been the focus of debate and confusion since the discovery of Javanese and Chinese specimen at the end of the 19th century. Both the paleontological and lithic record, as well as the sites from which these materials are recorded, are not well understood due to a variety of factors and depite their relevance for general issues in human evolution. Keates discussion offers a valuable historical and theoretical background of research relevant to hominid behaviour during the Early and Middle Pleistocene before introducing an examination from the Nihewan sites as well as Xiaochangliang and Dongguto assemblages. Keates focuses on both lithic and fossil materials. An up-to-date review of some of the most important localities (e.g. Zhoukoudian, Kehe, Gongwangling) is included. While Keates conclusions are perhaps inevitable - she calls for the integration and recording of a variety of data-sets including fauna and sediments, better quality of research and integration of it - the volume offers a detailed introduction to Far Eastern Pleistocene human evolution in addition to valuable primary reserach. Both are well presented and assessable in the context of her comprehensive review. Extending beyond the usual coverage of textbooks this volume is an essential introduction as well as research contribution to the field. 387p. 179 b/w illus (BAR 2000)
