Excerpt from Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India, 1883, Vol. 22 IN the following memoir I have endeavoured as much as possible to confine myself to the actual description of the geology of the countries of which it treats, and to the consideration of such hypotheses and inferences as are absolutely necessary to a right understanding of the relations of the different formations. The bearing of the facts recorded on the wider question of the origin of the Himalaya, and of other mountain systems, has been in the main left for those physicists who have made such subjects their especial study. The geographical and topo graphical notices have been made as brief' as possible, their sole object being to enable the reader to easily comprehend the geological descriptions.
