DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn addressing environmental challenges like climate change, governments, charities and business tend to focus either on changing policy or business practice, or on urging individuals to adopt different behaviour. The role of human identity is largely absent from the debate. And yet, our identities - who we see ourselves as being - have a profound impact in shaping the responses we make to environmental challenges. This provocative book will rattle the cages of many environmentalists, 'green-minded' business-people and policy makers. In it, Crompton and Kasser suggest that many current approaches to addressing problems like climate change may actually inadvertently serve to reinforce those aspects of identity that drive us towards unsustainable behaviour in first place. They suggest that it will only be by re-shaping political debate and social institutions in order to promote more helpful aspects of identity that we can have any hope of meeting environmental challenges. The book closes by highlighting the opportunities that this perspective presents for building new alliances between people working not just on environmental issues, but also on a range of social and developmental concerns: Many of those aspects of human identity that frustrate progress on the environmental agenda also frustrate progress on meeting other challenges.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn our drive to improve human standards of living, we have paradoxically paid scant attention to the need for clean air and water; the impact of acid rain on agriculture, lakes and rivers; the effect of pollutants on the ozone layer; the safe disposal of hazardous wastes, and the relationship between population growth and the environment. It seems that every time governments are faced with an apparent choice between economic development and the protection of the environment, priority is always given to the former. Short-term plans -- dictated by canons of political survival and expediency -- always seem to take precedence over long-term strategies, with politicians and decision-makers deftly relegating environmental concerns to the realm of rhetoric. This book is an effort to better understand the problems faced by our global ecosystems. It is also the result of the authors deep commitment to urge both citizens and their leaders the world over to work together for a better protection of the environment so that our planet may be saved for the present and for future generations.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"How am I concerned about the environment from where I stand professionally?" Or, "what is the environmental edge of my profession?" A number of outstanding academics were asked to consider these questions in 1989 with the aim of opening an innovative discussion on environmental changes and an understanding of how these are related to human activities. At the personal invitation of the Programme Committee, 17 individuals, each of whom have different professional backgrounds and nationalities, prepared a paper and met for a symposium in Elsinore, Denmark, in September of 1990. Some of the authors revised their original papers as a result of the discussions during the symposium. After peer review and editing, the contributions were printed in this book in versions that express the authors' personal convictions and priority environmental concerns. The authors contributed to the symposium by delivering papers and participat ing in stimulating and sometimes provocative discussions. The Programme Committee is grateful for the professional inspiration provided and for the spiritual and warm, social atmosphere in which the symposium took place.
