Early Settlers of Alabama by Elizabeth Saunders Blair Stubbs, first published in 1899, is a rare manuscript, the original residing in one of the great libraries of the world. This book is a reproduction of that original, which has been scanned and cleaned by state-of-the-art publishing tools for better readability and enhanced appreciation. Restoration Editors' mission is to bring long out of print manuscripts back to life. Some smudges, annotations or unclear text may still exist, due to permanent damage to the original work. We believe the literary significance of the text justifies offering this reproduction, allowing a new generation to appreciate it.
This book contains all the marriages which took place in Cullman County between the year 1921 and 1937. Images of the original documents from the Cullman County Court House were examined page by page and transcribed. Not only was the basic information recorded, but other significant details were gathered such as names of bondsmen, names of officials performing the ceremony, names and relationships of those granting permission, and the location of the ceremony. Sometimes, other details such as birthdays, were recorded. Additionally, details of all licenses returned unexecuted were recorded. The main part of the book is an alphabetical listing of all the grooms. A full name index of the brides follows in the last section. This book is a handy tool for those with ancestors in Cullman County, or surrounding counties.

This ambitious work chronicles 250 years of the Cromartie family genealogical history. Included in the index of nearly fifty thousand names are the current generations, and all of those preceding, which trace ancestry to our family patriarch, William Cromartie, who was born in 1731 in Orkney, Scotland, and his second wife, Ruhamah Doane, who was born in 1745. Arriving in America in 1758, William Cromartie settled and developed a plantation on South River, a tributary of the Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina. On April 2, 1766, William married Ruhamah Doane, a fifth-generation descendant of a Mayflower passenger to Plymouth, Stephen Hopkins. If Cromartie is your last name or that of one of your blood relatives, it is almost certain that you can trace your ancestry to one of the thirteen children of William Cromartie , his first wife, and Ruhamah Doane, who became the founding ancestors of our Cromartie family in America: William Jr., James, Thankful, Elizabeth, Hannah Ruhamah, Alexander, John, Margaret Nancy, Mary, Catherine, Jean, Peter Patrick, and Ann E. Cromartie. These four volumes hold an account of the descent of each of these first-generation Cromarties in America, including personal anecdotes, photographs, copies of family bibles, wills, and other historical documents. This is the fifth volume of Dr. Justin Glenn’s comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume One began with the immigrant John Washington, who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and became the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It continued the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Volume Two highlighted notable family members in the next eight generations of John and Anne Washington’s descendants, including such luminaries as General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin. Volume Three traced the ancestry of the early Virginia members of this “Presidential Branch” back in time to the aristocracy and nobility of England and continental Europe. Volume Four resumed the family history where Volume One ended, and it contained Generation Eight of the immigrant John Washington’s descendants. Volume Five now presents Generation Nine, including more than 10,000 descendants. Future volumes will trace generations ten through fifteen, making a total of over 63,000 descendants. "After careful study of all sources for two years, the authors are of the opinion that [their Kennamer] forefathers were of High Dutch descent and lived in Holland near where that State borders with present-day Germany. ... They came to this country before the Revolutionary War and settled in the Carolinas."--Page 13. Some later went to Alabama. "Hans Kennamer, with a large family, and his eldest son, Jacob, who was married, came to the Cove and settled among the Indians in 1798, or not later than 1805. This place is now know as Kennamer Cove. ... The records of Madison County, Alabama, show that Samuel, Stephen and Jacob Kennamer bought land in that county in 1809. ... It is a well-known fact that the sons of Hans Kennamer settled ... in the western part of Jackson County, the eastern part of Madison County, and the northern part of Marshall County. David and Abram resided in Madison County, while John Kennamer lived at the place wher Paint Rock, Alabama, now is. ... Hans Kennamer died and was buried in Pisgah Cemetery, in Kennamer Cove, Alabama."--Page 14-15. Nothing is know of his wife. Son Jacob Kennemer (ca. 1776-1856) " ... moved from Alabama to Giles County, Tennessee where he acquired ... land of Sugar Creek. ... He was married twice, but the names of his wives could not be ascertained. He was buried on Anderson Creek, in Lauderdale County, Alabama, near Foster's Mill."--P. 17-18. This Brightwell Ancestors and Decendancy research begins with Len Reynolds Brightwell of Crenshaw Co. Alabama. The Brightwell family came to the USA and settled in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. There were Reynolds Brightwell men in those areas but we have not been able to connect our Len Reynolds Brightwell to the descendancy line yet. This Brightwell family settled in Crenshaw Co. and Covington Co. Alabama. Since then the Brightwell family has spread out throughout Alabama and numerous states but the ancestry of this book mainly deals with those older generations in Alabama.
