Hitherto, those intended to be used in education have been rather compendious works of reference, than introductions to the study of a science, and are often overloaded with details, while general principles are omitted. In the present work, an attempt has been made to avoid these evils, and so to classify, arrange, and systematize the information contained in it, that it may be immediately available both to the teacher and to the scholar; and by the omission of all non-essential details, whether political, statistical, or topographical, to confine the attention to the principal subject.
