Excerpt from The Literature of the South It is to be hoped that the following studies will emphasize this close contact of letters with the life of the South. The aim has been throughout, however, to escape the' stigma of sectionalism. The South, per se, retains its individuality - but its significance, as part of the nation, should have a wider under standing. For it will be found that the South has contributed to American literature, both by example and by accomplishment; that it has been original, even though much of its writing is imitative. The literature of the South is the literature of a people, and those people - after an evolution from the aristo crat to the democrat, taken in a wider sense - are themselves Americans as well as Southerners. The bibliographies contained in the Appendix will bespeak my indebtedness to the many sources of an historical and social nature. It is a pleasure here to express my deep appreciation of the unfailing courtesy given to me by the authorities of Columbia University Library, who have placed at my disposal every facility; in especial, I would thank Mr. Frederic W. Erb, whose personal interest and watchfulness have done much to enrich my bibliographies. To the St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library I also wish to extend my grateful acknowledgment. Excerpt from The Library of Southern Literature North Carolina, January 11, 1864. His career suggests the significance Of the time, for in his personality are the storm, the lightning and the swift changes Of war. Born in the midst Of the great civil struggle, he reached his most impressionable period in the stern hours Of the Reconstruction, was a college student when the New South called for a new generation, and entered manhood during that wide readjustment, North and South, that has brought forth a nation. He was sensitive in the highest degree, endowed with rare genius for expression, passionately fond Of the tragic and heroic, and drew from his environment the essence Of the Old South both in its glory and its doom. Excerpt from American Literature A fuller treatment of Southern writers is to be found in this work than in other volumes of similar size on American litera ture. In the last decade or two the recognition of the literary contribution of the South has steadily grown, until the space allotted to the subject has assumed respectable proportions. In recent histories it covers many pages. Even yet, however, we have only imperfectly come to understand the far-reaching consequence in our literary development of the writings of men and women in the South since 1870; while the sterling worth of a few older authors is just now becoming more apparent as we are getting far enough away from the adverse conditions under which they wrote to see things in right perspective. In this account of American literature more space has been given to this group in the conviction that its variety and pecu liar quality should have wider recognition. Excerpt from Southern Literary Readings The material is arranged in a loose chronological order according to authors, some attention being paid to variety in subject-matter and literary form. It has been thought unwise to group the material according to types of litera ture, for two reasons. In the first place, the author always has been and the editor believes Will continue to be the logical unit for literary study in the schools, and it is a distinct disadvantage to have a writer's works scattered here and there throughout the book. In the second place, to group the selections by types or kinds of compositions is to lose the opportunity for presenting the historical development of our literature as a whole, and to impair the knowledge of its continuity of growth and the similarity of its subject-matter through the various periods. Moreover, comparative study in literary types may be almost if not quite as readily pursued When the material is arranged chronologically as When it is grouped by types. In the notes frequent suggestion has been made for comparative study, Which the teacher of more advanced pupils may carry out When supplementary work is deemed advisable. Excerpt from A History of Southern Literature In only one period may be found plentiful results of study - the period named in this book The Beginnings. This division Of the subject Professor Moses Coit Tyler has treated with such scholarly accuracy and fullness that the author could do little more than repeat his assertions. But this period past, there is indeed poverty Of data. It is the author's hope that a more zealous spirit Of research may be aroused by this pioneer volume, and that through this means not a few works Of real value may again be brought to light. Excerpt from Pioneers of Southern Literature, Vol. 2 Wold would hardly remain a mem ory but for the fact that he wreaked his hate upon the dead in the shape of a biography of Poe. Neverthe less, he and his successors have failed to mar the continued growth of Mr. Poe's fame. His foibles have been held up to censure, and his faults - he had one which be came his master - have been paraded as ii these would utterly invalidate his claims to genius. This has not always originated from the fact that these self-constituted censors have despised his faults above those of others. The man who does not take his literary values from his cotemporaries must ever appear to them as erratic and perverse, nor can they have any conception of his genius, but in many instances and on the most petty pretexts deny to him any such creative force.
