First privately published in the United States in 1920 and ruthlessly reviewed on both sides of Atlantic, “Women in Love” remains one of the most provoking novels of this century. Largely because it defies single-mindedness or dogmatic preconceptions, the text has consistently thwarted the critics in their attemps at “nailing it dow”. The present collection of essays sets out to explore how the novel keeps “walking away with the nail”, as Lawrence himself wrote in “Morality and the Novel”.
This first book-length study of D. H. Lawrence’s lifelong engagement with music surveys his extensive musical interests and how these permeate his writing, while also situating Lawrence within a growing body of work on music and modernism. A twin focus considers the music that shaped Lawrence’s novels and poetry, as well as contemporary developments in music that parallel his quest for new forms of expression. Comparisons are made with the music of Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Wagner, and British composers, including Bax, Holst and Vaughan Williams, and with the musical writings of Forster, Hardy, Hueffer (Ford), Nietzsche and Pound. Above all, by exploring Lawrence and music in historical context, this study aims to open up new areas for study and a place for Lawrence within the field of music and modernism.
The Marquis de Sade is famous for his forbidden novels like Justine, Juliette, and the 120 Days of Sodom. The First 'Women in Love' is one of Lawrence's greatest works, and is the only full length work of fiction which he completed between The Rainbow and the extensively revised Women in Love. It is a piece of fiction generated in the England, and the Europe, of the First World War. Publishers were alarmed by the fate of his previous novel The Rainbow and The First 'Women in Love' was rejected by every publisher who saw it. As a result it is a novel whose very existence as an independent text has been ignored, and which has not been published until now. The First 'Women in Love' shares much of its material with Women in Love, but its central relationships are dissimilar, and the ending radically different.
