Robert Emmet's life, death, and immediate elevation into the pantheon of Irish nationalist heroes are well known. These essays on Emmet's life and legacy, however, demonstrate a new interdisciplinary approach to studies of the Irish nationalist hero. The short but brilliant career as sculptor and painter of the Irish artist Robert Costelloe included periods in New York, North Carolina, Rome and London. His tragic death in 1974 at the age of 31 ended the career of an artist whose creativity and diversity merited a high profile in Irish art of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was the recipient of various awards at home and abroad and his volume of work includes drawings, paintings, ceramics and sculpture, examples of which are in important collections in Ireland and abroad.
