Excerpt from Danton There was no great difficulty about it; it would not be very difficult even now. In Spite Of the ruin wrought at Arcis sur-aube by Russian cannon in February I8I4, the scene described by Balzac in 1847 differs but little from that in which Jacques Danton spent his early years, to which he returned, several times over, to gather fresh strength, or escape the nightmares that assailed him. And to this day the little town presents much the same appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Danton and Other Verse The following sketches of episodes in the French Revolution, which for convenience are labelled 'Danton, ' have no pretensions to be a drama, such as the name might seem to advance, nor to historical precision. Words, e.g., are put into the speakers' mouths on other occasions than those on which they were actually used, and all the incidents are not vouched for, though all, or most, are based on actual or reputed facts. It will be observed that the events belong chiefly to the last six months of Danton's life, when he had retired from office; when the Terror reigned; but long after the September massacres. The portrait given is not, I think, in its main outlines unfaithful. But it would be, if even earlier in his life he had, as was so long believed, devised and organised those hideous massacres. Excerpt from Captain Danton's Daughters: A Novel The rainy afternoon was deepening into dismal twilight; and with her cheek resting on her hand, the young lady sat with a thoughtful face. A long avenue, shaded by towering tamaracks, led down to stately entrance-gates beyond, a winding road, leading to a village, not to be seen from the window. Swelling meadows, bare and bleak now, spread away to the right and left of the thickly-wooded grounds; and beyond all, through the trees, there were glimpses of the great St. Lawrence, tur bid, and swollen, rushing down to the stormy Gulf. For nearly half an hour the young lady sat by the window, her solitude undisturbed; no sign of life within or without the silent house. Then came the gallop of horse's hoofs, and a lad rode up the avenue and disappeared round the angle of the building. Ten minutes after there was a tap at the door, followed by the entrance of a servant with a dark Canadian face. 'I own, ' he went on, 'to the Convention and the whole nation that for Marat as an individual I have no liking. To speak frankly, I know his disposition by experience. Not only 15 it violent and perverse, but unsocial.' He went on to disavow on his own part all factions, to admit the good motives that might have dictated the report, but to remind the Convention how it contrasted with that of another Minister--Garat--and to point out that 1 Which the Moniteur strangely does not print till Nov. 10. 1792 APPEAL FOR' CONCORD no monarchy had ever been overthrown without some good citizens suffering, and that if in the hour of passion there had been vindictive revenge on the part of individuals there had been marvellous achievements on the part of the community. Roland had mistaken petty and miserable intrigues for vast conspiracies. If there were men aspiring to a dictatorship or triumvirate let them be named. There should be full and complete inquiry, and the Convention should proceed against anyone held guilty. To speak of a 'Robespierre faction' seemed to him the language of prejudice or bad citizenship. He had brought no accusation against other people, and was ready to answer any brought against himself. What was wanted' was a thoroughgoing inquiry, so that good citizens wishing only what was straightforward and above-board, both as to men and affairs, might know whether there was anyone it was their duty to hate, or whether they could co-operate like brothers in what must assuredly be the Convention's sublime career. Many who listened thought themselves wiser men and better patriots than Danton. But..

Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church.
