Excerpt from The New Life of Dante Alighieri The New Life. I. In that part of the book of my memory before which little can be read is found a rubric which sayeth, Incipit Vita Nova. Under which rubric I find the words written which it is my intention to copy into this little book, - and if not all of them, at least their meaning. II. Nine times now, since my birth, had the heaven of light turned almost to the same point in its own gyration, when first appeared before mine eyes the glorious Lady of my mind, who was called Beatrice by many who knew not wherefore she was so called. Excerpt from The Early Life of Dante Alighieri: Together With the Original in Parallel Pages Love, it embraces the astronomical system of Ptolemy together with the belief in the influence of the planets on the various conditions of humanity as calculated by the ancient Astrologers - Dante has been reproached especially in Germany, but also in England, with a want of tenderness, and notwithstanding the exquisite pathos of certain descriptions in the Divine Commedia (too well known to be here singled out), notwithstanding, every possible allowance on account of the nature of the subject on which he treats, many continue to entertain such an opinion; it appears to me, however, impossible to rise up from a perusal of the Win mtova without feeling, that in proportion as the mind of Dante was more powerful than that of other men so was his heart susceptible of tender emotions in a degree rarely to be found in others. This little history of his first love, with an analysis of his feelings from the commencement to the tragical conclusion, leaves not a doubt upon the mind, that with a supernatural degree of Intellect be united a heart of the most sensitive materials. Excerpt from The Life and Times of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1 of 2 The Life of Dante Alighieri, which is here translated from the Italian, was published by Count Cesare Balbo at Turin, in 1839. The Author is a Piedmontese, and in his youth served under Napoleon; he is a warm advocate for constitutional liberty, and published at Paris, in 1843, a book on the future prospects of Italy, entitled Delle Speranze d' Italia; it was dedicated to Vicenzio Gioberti, the great Opponent of the Jesuits, and acquired a considerable reputation. But Count Balbo has also taken an active part in the politics of his country, and was Prime Minister to Charles Albert, King of Sardinia, during the time that Italy, and indeed almost all Europe, were convulsed by revolutions. He resigned office in July, 1848. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Vita Nuova, or New Life of Dante Alighieri: Translated From the Italian by Frances De Mey II. Nine times already, since my birth, the starry heaven of light had returned almost to the self-same point on its revolution, when first appeared to my eyes the glorious lady of my mind, she was by many called Beatrice, not knowing wherefore she was so called. She had been so long in this life, that in her time the starry heavens had moved towards the orient one of the twelfth parts of a degree, so that almost at the beginning of her ninth year she appeared to me, and I beheld her almost at the end of my ninth year. And she appeared to me clad in a most noble colour, a subdued and pure crimson, girded and adorned in a manner befitting her extreme youth. At that moment I say truly that the spirit of life, which dwelleth in the most secret chamber of the heart, began to tremble so violently, that it was painfully perceptible in the smallest pulses; and trembling it spake these words: "Behold a god stronger than I, who coming, shall rule over me." At that moment the animal spirit, that inhabits the high chamber where the sensitive spirits have their perceptions, began to marvel greatly, and speaking more especially to the spirits of the eyes, he said these words: "Your beatitude hath now been manifested to you."
