But the choice has been restricted by several considerations. From their private nature a large number of the letters are unsuitable for publication; a still larger number refer to matters which would be of little interest to the general public; others have been already used in the 'Life of Dean Stanley, ' or were incorporated in his writings with little or no change; others turn upon theological controversies which have, perhaps, occupied too large a space in the recently published biography of their writer, and are therefore excluded from these pages.
