Written primarily by Daisy Phillips, with a few by her husband Jack, to her family in England, these letters describe the creation of a shortlived English home in the Windermere Valley of southwestern British Columbia. Not given to introspection, Daisy registers her immediate and frank reactions to her new environment and startling new way of life. From her letters we learn of the experiences of the Phillips and their neighbours in settling the newly opened land and of their attempts to grow fruit in an area with limited agricultural potential.

Excerpt from Letters Written From England: August 4 to November 4, 1914 Arthur Crosby Ludington was the son of Charles Henry and Josephine Noyes Ludington and was born in New York City on March 6th, 1880. His preparation for college was received at the Black Hall (Connecticut) School, and at St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire. After graduating with honors from Yale University, he was connected for nearly three years with a banking firm in New York City, and then went to Princeton as instructor in Political Science and assistant to President Woodrow Wilson. In the summer of 1907 he went to Germany and studied at Heidelberg University, and later took courses at Columbia. At this time he identified himself with political reform work in New York and gave especial attention to the betterment of election laws, helping to frame the direct nominations and Massachusetts ballot bills which are now laws of New York State. He served for several years as a member of the Legislative Committee of the Citizens' Union of New York City and was active in the National Short Ballot Association. Among other things, he made a compilation of the variations in the forms of the ballot, from the days of the "vest pocket" variety to the present Australian and composite forms. Before his last trip abroad, he was attached for a time to the Department of the Interior at Washington, writing a report on the Indian policy of the United States Government.
