I wanted this book to be the story of the people, the conditions they faced, and how they met their challenges. It is about the family of my parents, Leland Eddy Bolt and Fern Leoline (Brubaker) Bolt. Their story is preceded by Leland and Ferns grandparents and parents, then my parents lives and accomplishments. The appendix shows some of their genealogical rootsat least what can be reliably proven. Many family members have contributed to this book as will be seen in the references and bibliography. Also, I must acknowledge the help and comments of others in the review process. Drew Rogers worked with his grandmother (Martha) and others on the Van Donge family details. Joan (Clemmons) Bolt provided lots of details developed by my cousin, Benjamin Hamele Bolt (deceased), on the Benjamin Draper Bolt family. Cousins Ann (Denman) Hultgren and Carol (Denman) Holst provided details about the Kenneth Denman and Margaret (Bolt) Denman Family. Cousins Mary (Collier) Buck and her brother, Michael Collier, helped with information on the Charles Collier and Hazel (Brubaker) Collier family. Cousin Melanie (Mordhorst) Entzminger helped with the Edward Mordhorst and Iris (Brubaker) Mordhorst families. Robert Van Donge and his sisters Carolee (Van Donge) White and Connie (Van Donge) Rogers provided details of the lives of their Van Donge parents.

This book is in honor of Jacqueline Bolt. She was born Jacqueline Joyce Barker in Cocoa, Florida, and grew up in the Florida Panhandle. Leland Emet (Lee) Bolt, the author, was born in Payette, Idaho. It was a wonder they even met. This is the story of their family, history, and travels. Jacqueline’s sister, Hazel, was married to a Naval Officer, who was executive officer of the navy torpedo station in Newport, Rhode Island. While Jacqueline was visiting in July 1950, Lee was assigned a ship home ported in Newport and met Jacqueline. He knew this was the girl for him, and by Christmas, they were engaged. They married in 1952. Jacqueline was the most wonderful wife and mother. She was the guiding light when Lee was away on deployments (Korea and Vietnam), operational commitments, and business trips. She closely monitored the boys’ school curriculum and work. She taught them respect and manners. Says Lee, “Our children and I are so thankful that this wonderful girl was a loving strong example and guiding parent. She ensured that the boys became strong swimmers and could tap dance!”

Leland was a Post Office, an elementary school, a telephone central, a lake and a bridge. All are gone except the lake. Mary Beth Munn Yntema became the keeper of data of the pioneers, their homes and farms, their children and their school. She writes down her memories so Leland would not be forgotten. Lake Leland with a post office at the end of its bridge is the focus of a community of families that arrived from many places. They carved farms out of the virgin timber and shared a simple life of fishing and swimming in the summer, cattle care and timber tasks the rest of the time. The main stories occur from 1890 to 1940. A railroad logging company, two sawmill operations and family dairy farms were the economic base. A unique society centered on the one-room school that built life-long friendships and an extended social family. The children were welcome in neighbor homes as if they were relatives. Everyone cooperated in the farm and timber tasks. Everyone rejoiced in successes of the children and shared the sorrows of the many untimely deaths or loss of house or barn to fires. The virgin timber cut was over. The Great Depression came. The story closes with the Second World War, its draft, internment camp and casualties. The school and post office closed as families moved to new jobs. Mary Beths own coming of age experiences play out against this framework of houses and people of Leland.

Almost seventy years ago the first Folsom projectile point found in association with ancient bison bones in northern New Mexico demonstrated that Paleoindian people were in the New World as long ago as the end of the last ice age. To this day intact deposits containing Folsom points are rare, yet these points, with their distinctive channel flakes and exquisite craftsmanship, remain the best identifier of the culture. The Cooper site, discovered in 1992 in northwestern Oklahoma, is among the largest Folsom-age kill sites in the southern plains. Including extraordinarily well-preserved bison bones and thirty-three projectile points, the site has yielded major contributions to what is known of this early people. Leland C. Bement outlines the history of the Cooper site, its discovery and excavation. As the remains were found in stratified bonebeds, they provide the first clear traces of sequential Folsom activity. Analysis of the bones indicates a selective or "gourmet" butchering technique and offers insights into bison-herd demographics. Assessment of the projectile points suggests the movements of Folsom groups in relation to lithic sources. Here also is the first evidence of Folsom hunting ritual, in the form of a startling red zigzag painted on one of the skulls. The painted skull--the oldest design-painted object in North America--greatly enlarges the significance of the Cooper site, offering evidence of early ritual rarely seen in the tangible physical record.

Shrinkage, specific gravity, and hardness of two shipments of silk-oak (Grevillea robusta) from Hawaii were evaluated to provide basic information pertinent to the use of the wood for cabinet and furniture purposes. The wood resembles Hawaii-grown shamel ash (Fraxinus uhdei ) in the properties evaluated. Shrinkage compares well with that of black cherry, silver maple, or red lauan. Side hardness of green wood considerably exceeds that of black cherry and paper birch, but that of air-dry wood is closely comparable to that of those two Mainland species. End hardness of green wood compares well with that of black cherry, but that of air-dry wood more closely resembles that of paper birch Density of the wood is generally comparable to that of paper birch.
