Born in 1900 to a soon-to-be-widowed postmaster's wife in a small French village, Hélène Delangle's background offered no suggestion of the extraordinary life she was to lead. The first step was to leave the country behind and head to the city -- in this case, a Paris in the grip of an intoxicating 1920s blend of creativity and debauchery. She became a dancer, and then a stripper. But the demi-monde of gauze veils and admirers was not enough. A visit to the Actors' Championships, a uniquely French meeting of the theatrical world with the race-track, opened her eyes to the glamorous combination of machines and speed. Quickly establishing herself as a racer of uncommon talent and audacity, the beautiful woman now known as Hellé Nice -- Hellish Nice to her British fans -- then caught the attention of none other than Ettore Bugatti, founder of the marque with which her name will always be associated. And yet, despite the fame and the fortune she amassed in an unprecedented career, she died penniless and alone, an old woman in a crumbling Nice flat surrounded only by memories. THE BUGATTI QUEEN is the story of a great pioneer of motor racing who happened to be a woman. Re-creating her rollercoaster career with great verve and panache, Miranda Seymour brilliantly shows us a life now forgotten -- and makes it unforgettable.

This is a story of a first generation son of immigrant parents who came to America after the turn-of-the-century in the early 1900s. It traces the life of a boy who never lost sight of who he was or what was expected of him. His formative years were spent during the great depression in an area that had little to offer but where much was expected even when the going proved difficult. It is a story that disguises pathos as humor even though the humor is genuine. It portrays a life fraught with difficulty but where each difficulty is overcome by sheer force of willpower. The writer displays affection for his mother by portraying a person of such great strength and character that one must imagine a giant only to find a thin aging woman barely five feet tall. Each segment of the story has its own unique appeal. One episode dealing with the writers description of life at a CCC camp is especially compelling. It deals with Polish/American boys interacting with the Catholic Church three thousand miles from home and is sure to bring a tear to the eye of even the hardest heart. Although the entire piece is essentially esoteric it has meaning and purpose to anyone who survived that era. . . . Reviewed by Tom Topolski

For the seventy-two years of my existence I have been a person who appreciates various cultures. It is necessary to travel in order to truly know the beautiful things in life, to respect the ideas and the colors of our planet. I spent thirty-six years in France, I took part in the Second World War, I shared in the emotion of the liberation at Normandy on June 6, 1944, and I completed military service in Algeria and Germany. I passed fifteen years at the General Transatlantic Company on seven different ships, on board of which I saw and served international celebrities, presidents, and chiefs of government. I have explored many ports during the stopovers that the liners made. When I was thirty-six years old I traveled across the United States of America, touring from North to South, from East to West by car. I finished this marvelous voyage in California, and I passed through San Francisco, Carmel and Santa Barbara. In Carmel and Santa Barbara I became the happy owner of two different restaurants. I will honor these unforgettable memories for the rest of my life.
