We are pleased to put forth the "Laboratory Manual of Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry I." This manual, prepared according to the PCI B. Pharm course regulations 2014, is divided into three sections: systematic qualitative analysis, preparation of suitable solid derivatives and construction of molecular models. The methods of all the experiments are drawn from the latest editions of official books of pharmaceutical organic chemistry and research papers, ensuring the inclusion of the latest advancements in methodologies or apparatus. This manual is designed for outcome-based education. Each experiment follows a uniform format, with sections for practical significance, practical outcomes (PrOs), mapping with course outcomes, theory, resources used, procedure, precautions, observations, results, conclusion, references, and synopsis questions. Each experiment offers an opportunity for students to perform practical work, developing proficiency in effectively managing equipment, handling glassware, chemicals, reagents, and writing analytical reports. In addition, the questions at the end of the experiments help to enhance students' knowledge, benefiting them as they pursue higher studies. During the laboratory period, you will have to multiple tasks while performing the experiment. It is essential to document your actions and observations thoroughly as you proceed. Always plan your work ahead, considering what you are doing, why you are doing it, what is happening, and what conclusions you can draw from your experiment. We acknowledge the help and cooperation of various individuals in bringing out this manual. We are highly indebted to the authors of the books and articles mentioned in the references, which were a major source of information for this manual. We also thank the publishers, designers, and printers who worked hard to publish this manual in a timely manner. We hope that this manual will be helpful to students in understanding concepts, principles, and performing procedures. We wish you all the best!
This expansive and practical textbook contains organic chemistry experiments for teaching in the laboratory at the undergraduate level covering a range of functional group transformations and key organic reactions. The editorial team have collected contributions from around the world and standardized them for publication. Each experiment will explore a modern chemistry scenario, such as: sustainable chemistry; application in the pharmaceutical industry; catalysis and material sciences, to name a few. All the experiments will be complemented with a set of questions to challenge the students and a section for the instructors, concerning the results obtained and advice on getting the best outcome from the experiment. A section covering practical aspects with tips and advice for the instructors, together with the results obtained in the laboratory by students, has been compiled for each experiment. Targeted at professors and lecturers in chemistry, this useful text will provide up to date experiments putting the science into context for the students.
Practical microbiology is a field of study that involves the practical application of microbiology, including laboratory work, experiments, and the use of equipment: • Laboratory work This includes preparing and sterilizing equipment and culture media, preparing microbial cultures, inoculating media, incubating cultures, and sampling during growth. • Experiments Practical microbiology involves performing experiments, such as dissections and preparing permanent slides. • Equipment Practical microbiology involves using equipment such as microscopes and laboratory reagents. Some topics covered in practical microbiology include: • Identifying common microbes, their classification, and their role • Understanding how bacteria become resistant and how to test for antimicrobial susceptibility • Learning about the importance of quality management and assurance • Covering disease-causing bacteria, bacterial viruses, and the use of phage for treating diseases • Learning about the microbiome, gene editing with CRISPR, parasites, fungi, and animal viruses Some books that cover practical microbiology include: • Practical Microbiology A concise guide for students of microbiology that includes more than 230 experiments, diagrams, and viva-voce exercises Practical Pharmaceutical Engineering provides readers with the technical information and tools needed to deal with most common engineering issues that can arise in the course of day-to-day operations of pharmaceutical/biotech research and manufacturing. Engineers working in pharma/biotech wear many hats. Practical physical pharmaceutics is a course that helps students understand the physical and physicochemical properties of dosage forms and their principles. It also helps students gain insight into the areas of pharmaceutical dosage form stability studies and formulation research and development.
The second edition of this classic text book has been completely revised, updated, and extended to include chapters on biomimetic amination reactions, Wacker oxidation, and useful domino reactions. The first-class author team with long-standing experience in practical courses on organic chemistry covers a multitude of preparative procedures of reaction types and compound classes indispensable in modern organic synthesis. Throughout, the experiments are accompanied by the theoretical and mechanistic fundamentals, while the clearly structured sub-chapters provide concise background information, retrosynthetic analysis, information on isolation and purification, analytical data as well as current literature citations. Finally, in each case the synthesis is labeled with one of three levels of difficulty. An indispensable manual for students and lecturers in chemistry, organic chemists, as well as lab technicians and chemists in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.
The second edition of the book continues to offer a range of pedagogical features maintaining the balanced approach of the text. The attempts have been made to further strengthen the conceptual understanding by introducing more ideas and a number of solved problems. Comprehensive in approach, this text presents a rigorous treatment of organic chemistry to enable undergraduate students to learn the subject in a clear, direct, easily understandable and logical manner. Presented in a new and exciting way, the goal of this book is to make the study of organic chemistry as stimulating, interesting, and relevant as possible. Beginning with the structures and properties of molecules, IUPAC nomenclature, stereochemistry, and mechanisms of organic reactions, proceeding next to detailed treatment of chemistry of hydrocarbons and functional groups, then to organometallic compounds and oxidation–reduction reactions, and ending with a study of selected topics (such as heterocyclic compounds, carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides and proteins, drugs and pesticides, dyes, synthetic polymers and spectroscopy), the book narrates a cohesive story about organic chemistry. Transitions between topics are smooth, explanations are lucid, and tie-ins to earlier material are frequent to maintain continuity. The book contains over 500 solved problems from simple to really challenging ones with suitable explanations. In addition, over 275 examples and solved problems on IUPAC nomenclature, with varying levels of difficulty, are included. About Some Key Features of the Book • EXPLORE MORE: Four sets of solved problems provide in-depth knowledge and enhanced understanding of some important aspects of organic chemistry. • MINI ESSAYS: Three small essays present interesting write-ups to provide students with introductory knowledge of chemistry of natural products such as lipids, terpenes, alkaloids, steroids along with nucleic acids and enzymes. • NOTABILIA: Twenty-two ‘notabilia boxes’ interspersed throughout the text highlight the key aspects of related topics, varying from concepts of chemistry to the chemistry related to day-to-day life. • STRUCTURES AND MECHANISMS NOT IN ORDER: Cites examples of common errors made by students while drawing structural formulae and displaying arrows in reaction mechanisms and helps them to improve on language of organic chemistry by teaching appropriate drawings and their significance. • GLOSSARY: Includes ‘Name reactions’, ‘Reagents’, and some important terms for quick revision by students. Clearly written and logically organized, the authors have endeavoured to make this complex and important branch of science as easy as possible for students to learn from and for teachers to teach from.
