DOWNLOAD EBOOKA Sustainable Future for Small States: Pacific 2050 is part of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s regional strategic foresight programme that examines whether current development strategies set the region on a path to achieve sustainable development by 2050. The study analyses whether Commonwealth Pacific small states (Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu) will achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. It reviews critical areas that can serve as a catalyst for change in the region: governance (examining political governance, development effectiveness and co-ordination, and ocean governance); non-communicable diseases; information and communications technology and climate change (focussing on migration and climate change, and energy issues). In each of these areas, possible trajectories to 2050 are explored, gaps in the current policy responses are identified, and recommendations are offered to steer the region towards the Pacific Vision of ‘a region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity, so that all Pacific people can lead free, healthy, and productive lives’.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis report provides an overview of the current state of the coastal and marine environment in relation to the nine categories of threats outlined by the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA). The report indicates that legal and institutional arrangements have been strengthened and now cover most regions of the world, but that despite these heightened efforts globally, coastal and marine ecosystems continue to deteriorate mainly because of pressures by human development. DOWNLOAD EBOOKconducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Demographic change in fishing communities has implications for the future of fishing, fisheries, the fishing industry, and the social development of fishing communities in the Asian region. This publication looks at demographic change in small-scale fishing communities to understand potential implications for fisheries sustainability, migration patterns, climate change adaptation, and livelihoods diversification. The publication explores the general question: How are fishing communities in the region changing with demographic changes? Specifically the publication tries to address the following questions: (1) What are the changes in demography (ageing, migration) in selected Asian fishing communities? (2) How are fishers adjusting their livelihoods with the changes in fishery resources and labour availability? Are they moving to other livelihoods? (3) What are the consequences of these adaptation strategies? Are there any gender differences in the impact of such adaptation strategies? (4) What are the challenges faced and policy and programme support needed for fishing communities for sustainable small-scale fisheries?
