DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe field of the neurosciences is one of the most rapidly growing in present biological research. Its molecular aspects are dealt with by the discipline of neurobiochemistry. As the theme of the Mosbacher Colloquium, we chose this term rather than the term "neurochemistry", in order to stress the dynamic biochemical aspects of present molecu lar neurobiology and to avoid the flavor of being purely descriptive and "static", which is frequently associated with the term neurochem istry. This appears the more warranted, since the natural products and analytical chemistry phase of discovering the basic chemical com ponents of the nervous system has passed its culmination. The period of assessment has laid the foundation for studying the dynamic inter play of the various chemical components in the actual biological opera tion of nervous tissue. Thus, neurobiochemis~ry is that part of the neurosciences which is dominated by the ways of thinking and the metho dology of biochemistry. For this Colloquium only topics were selected that deal with the biochemistry of neurons. Thus, we excluded from the agenda other neu ral cells such as glial cells (astrocytes, ependymal cells, oligoden drocytes), meningeal cells, and capillary endothelial cells. This restriction was applied for two reasons: (1) The time available for the meeting did not allow an extensive display of the whole spectrum of neurobiochemical research. (2) The biochemistry of neurons is far more advanced than that of any other cell type of the nervous system •.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"A terrific book that deals with present day concerns."--Thomas King, Governor General's Award-wining author of The Back of the Turtle and The Inconvenient Indian "To understand this story, it is important to know the People and where they came from and what they went through." So begins a haunting story that explores with frank and honest words the dark legacy of the residential school system and its impact on individuals, families and communities. James Nathan and Jake Noland have been best friends for life. After finishing mission school they return to their Gwich'in community in the Northwest Territories. Their lives revolve around bootleggers, the bar, drug abuse and meaningless sex. James and Jake try to dull their painful memories of the school. Each hides a dark secret that fuels his nightmares. Enough alcohol silences the demons for a night; a gun and a single bullet silences demons forever. When a friend commits suicide and a former priest appears on television, the community is shattered. James and Jake confront their childhood abuse and break the silence to begin a journey of healing and rediscovery.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKRevised edition of this classic work brings the story of the Amish into the 21st century. Since its publication in 1989, The Riddle of Amish Culture has become recognized as a classic work on one of America's most distinctive religious communities. But many changes have occurred within Amish society over the past decade, from westward migrations and a greater familiarity with technology to the dramatic shift away from farming into small business which is transforming Amish culture. For this revised edition, Donald B. Kraybill has taken these recent changes into account, incorporating new demographic research and new interviews he has conducted among the Amish. In addition, he includes a new chapter describing Amish recreation and social gatherings, and he applies the concept of "social capital" to his sensitive and penetrating interpretation of how the Amish have preserved their social networks and the solidarity of their community.
