Excerpt from Journey to Ararat Yet the history and results of these expedi tions are' by no means generally known either in Great Britain or the United States. Of the narratives of scientific voyages and travels pub lished abroad, comparatively 'few, and those only the most trivial, are ever translated into English. Though replete with matter of the most interesting kind, yet they are generally ei ther too cumbrous in style or too voluminous to suit a people with whom habits of busmess have generated a distaste for whatever seems pedantic or prolix. Their attractiveness thus escapes notice, and a large mine of valuable in formation; practical as Well as scientific, remains inaccessible to the English reader. Excerpt from From the Gulf to Ararat, an Expedition Through Mesopotamia and Kurdistan I have to preface this book with an apology and, worse still, an excuse. The apology is for venturing to publish at the present time the record of a journey which (except for quite the last stage) took place in that almost prehistoric epoch before the war. My excuse is twofold: firstly, that fifteen months of enforced idleness drove me into writing it; and, secondly, that subsequent events have contrived to add a special interest which it could not otherwise have claimed. Although in no sense a war-book, it deals with countries which have been the scene of two, if not three, campaigns in the present war, and on this fact I rely to justify my temerity. The first of these campaigns-taking them in the order of our journey from South to North is the British Expedition to Mesopotamia. Its main features are so well known as barely to need repetition: the landing of our force at the mouth of the shatt-el-arab in November 1914. Excerpt from Transcaucasia and Ararat: Being Notes of a Vacation Tour in the Autumn of 1876 Those parts of the book which treat of the physical phenomena of the countries traversed need no similar modifications to make them applicable now; while those which treat of ethnography and economic resources need comparatively few. I have, however, while revising the book throughout, added new footnotes mentioning the chief recent developments of industry and commerce, and the opening of additional railways. Excerpt from The Romance of Missions: Inside Views of Life and Labor, Land of Ararat When the proposition to prepare these narratives for the press was first made, an almost insurmountable obstacle pre sented itself in the fear that such publicity, if known to our Armenian converts, might seriously mar the simplicity of their Christian character. This evil I have endeavored to obviate by changing the names of persons now living, whose history is briefly sketched in these pages. And I may add, that the pictures are not intentionally embellished; it has been my aim to adhere, faithfully, to the original in each portraiture, giving the very words employed by individuals, and truthfully stating both sides, so far as known.
