DOWNLOAD EBOOKWas Jinnah the sole driving force behind the Partition of India? Or was he a champion of Islam who stood for a new Islamic renaissance? Mahomed Ali Jinnah started his political career in the Congress as a staunch Indian nationalist. He believed in secular politics and was opposed to bringing religion into it. He was known as an ambassador of Hindu–Muslim unity. So why did he, towards the end of his career, initiate the creation of a separate Muslim-state? This new biography provides the answers while casting fresh light on Jinnah's character, his personal life, his political and legal careers, his relationship with Gandhi, Nehru as well as his disagreements with their ideas. Carefully examining the major events of his life – from early childhood to his first speech as President of the All India Muslim League – Yasser Latif Hamdani presents a complex and compelling portrait of Jinnah who is often narrowly regarded as a votary of a theocratic Islamic state. Based on extensive research and a wealth of archival material, Hamdani has revealed those traits of Jinnah’s personality that made him the most misunderstood leader of his times. He also comments on how religious zealots have turned Pakistan into an Islamic Republic contrary to Jinnah's vision.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis edited translation of Syed Nur Ahmad's landmark study, Martial Law to Martial Law, provides the most comprehensive study in English or Urdu of the politics of the Punjab. Drawing on his career as a journalist and as former director of information for the government of the Punjab, Nur Ahmad gives an eyewitness account of the politics of the province from the imposition of martial law in 1919 (following the Jalianwala Bagh massacre) to the reestablishment of martial law accompanying the coup d'etat led by General Ayub Khan in Pakistan in 1958. Nur Ahmad relates the events in the Punjab to the larger Indian Muslim political scene, assesses the development and eventual decline of the Unionist Party (which stood against the partition of India), and traces the rise of support for the Muslim League. He also looks at the post-independence period in Pakistan and the failure of the parliamentary regime, discussing how national-level politics affected the Punjab._

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe book is based on nine articles from various journals over the past several years or appeared in various conference proceedings. At least one of them was published as a chapter in an edited work. However, all of them are based on original archival material or contemporary published sources available in Pakistan, India, Turkey and Britain. The theme of these papers, as the title suggests, is the South Asian perceptions and responses regarding the political events that unfolded in the background of the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Turkish republic by Mustafa Kemal. The book begins with an analysis of the literature on the nineteenth-century pan-Islam in South Asia and then gradually unfolds its practical expression in the politics of the South Asia while interacting with the Turks in the milieu of British and Allied policies. It also tries to explain as to why the South Asians switched their sympathies from the Ottomans to nationalists under Ataturk and how they looked at the process of modernization in Turkey in comparison with the Muslims of Afghanistan and Iran. Lastly, the book attempts to examine the enduring relevance of pan-Islam in the politics of Pakistan and ventures to measure its trajectory in the future.
