Chief Reid Bennett and his “super-sleuth” dog tackle the crimes of Murphy’s Harbor in this “fairly sturdy, small-town tale, with quiet appeal” (Kirkus Reviews). In tiny Murphy’s Harbour, where Reid Bennett serves as the one‐man police force, questions and dead bodies tend to pile up all at once. The morning starts with Reid chasing off a gang of threatening teens with a baseball bat. Minutes later, Reid learns that a bank robber might be headed his way looking for vengeance. But the day does not really start rolling until Reid finds a dead woman in the trunk of a waterlogged car. What follows is a fast‐paced thriller involving rich lawyers, a questionable movie producer, and quite a few shifting identities. Everyone seems to be circling everyone else in a complicated orbit of sex and money. Can all these events be tied together?
The classic novel of freedom and the search for authenticity that defined a generation On the Road chronicles Jack Kerouac's years traveling the North American continent with his friend Neal Cassady, "a sideburned hero of the snowy West." As "Sal Paradise" and "Dean Moriarty," the two roam the country in a quest for self-knowledge and experience. Kerouac's love of America, his compassion for humanity, and his sense of language as jazz combine to make On the Road an inspirational work of lasting importance. Kerouac’s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be “Beat” and has inspired every generation since its initial publication more than fifty years ago. He did not even show me an ounce of pity.I tempted him into dating me using a divorce and Shaw Corporations as my bargaining chips, but he remained unmoved. He would never remember that nervous little girl who followed behind him cautiously. It was not until after we divorced that I realized that this so-called love had been one-sided...
Jimmy Lee Snow, A.K.A. Bobby Williams, is not just your average bank robber and jewelry thief; he is also a highly skilled and somewhat lucky escape artist. As he narrowly frees himself from a maximum-security institution, for a second time, he meets some interesting characters along the way that advertently or inadvertently aid in his freedom. Once on the run, he certainly breaks the law to acquire cash, a car and a new identity. Because he's oddly likable and not really violent, you seem to root for this lawbreaker, despite the fact you know he deserves to be caught and put back into the system. As you read further, you know Jimmy Lee isn't your typical criminal. One of the many characters he encounters along the way is a hooker. Yet the only thing he wants from her is a new identity. This would normally be quite odd coming from a guy who just left prison after ten years! He then picks up two runaways and convinces them to go back home, where he even funds the bus ride. This begins to show Jimmy Lee's odd sense of integrity. (By the way, we soon find out why he was "saving himself.") Part two begins with his true passion; Veronica Lin Brooks, a teacher and soon-to-be partner on the run. the back story is interesting and seemingly unbelievable at times, but the reader can certainly see her attraction to this likable escapee. As the adventure unfolds you find yourself wanting to lecture her and root for them, all at the same time. As the FBI and detectives search for them, you can feel all their desperation and exhaustion. It finally concludes with an unexpected ending, but stranger things have happened.
