DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe guiding theme of these essays by aesthetician, musician, and Santayana scholar Morris Grossman is the importance of preserving the tension between what can be unified and what is disorganized, random, and miscellaneous. Grossman described this as the tension between art and morality: Art arrests a sense of change and yields moments of unguarded enjoyment and peace; but soon, shifting circumstances compel evaluation, decision, and action. According to Grossman, the best art preserves the tension between the aesthetic consummation of experience and the press of morality understood as the business of navigating conflicts, making choices, and meeting needs. This concern was intimately related to his reading of George Santayana. The best philosophy, like the best art, preserves the tension between what can be ordered and what resists assimilation, and Grossman read Santayana as exemplifying this virtue in his embrace of multiple perspectives. Other scholars have noted the multiplicity or irony in Santayana’s work, but Grossman was unique in taking such a style to be a substantive part of Santayana’s philosophizing.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKUnmasking the Untold Story of World War II Of the thirty million who fought in the eastern front of World War II, eight million died, driven forward in suicidal charges, shattered by German shells and tanks. They were the men and women of the Red Army, a ragtag mass of soldiers who confronted Europe's most lethal fighting force and by 1945 had defeated it. Sixty years have passed since their epic triumph, but the heart and mind of Ivan–as the ordinary Russian soldier was called–remain a mystery. We know something about how the soldiers died, but nearly nothing about how they lived, how they saw the world, or why they fought. Sourced from previously inaccessible military archives, personal diaries, and intimate veterans' narratives, author Catherine Merridale unveils the untold journey of these soldiers from their first encounter with the German offensive to their hard-earned victory in Stalingrad–a place where survival was measured in mere hours. Accompany these brave hearts into the morose streets of Berlin, as they face their anger, fear, and finally, a bitter homecoming, denied of the new life for which they sacrificed everything. Discover this unique fusion of patriotism, courage, and human spirit that drove these undernourished, poorly led troops to overthrow the Nazi menace. Ivan's War emphatically places these invisible millions at the core of their deserved historical context, accounting for their major role in shaping a new era.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis story continues where "Spirit Dogs: Heroes In Heaven" left off, with Ivan in dog heaven, fraught with despair at being separated from his beloved Sarah -- until he is put in charge of five new arrivals and discovers that he can visit Sarah whenever he chooses. Thus begins Ivan's adventure as a leader of a group and a huge sense of self-doubt that causes him to be sent on a dangerous mission. The group's purpose, together, is to discover what it means to be a "whole dog", what they learned in their previous lives and what they still need to learn in order to become "whole". The group consists of Beauregard, an arrogant show Poodle; Murphy, a timid, shivering Spaniel-mix; Jolly, a big, white family pet; Carl, a Lhasa Apso who lived with a pair of psychoanalysts near Central Park; and Stealth, a fighting pit-bull terrier.
