The International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR) is a major international association promoting research and education in the fields of civil society, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector. Founded in 1992, ISTR has spent thirty years building a global community of scholars while also raising the awareness of the Third Sector and all it accomplishes. ISTR also works to broaden the inclusion and strengthen the voices of researchers in developing nations and Central and Eastern Europe, which have active Third Sectors but are under-represented in research literature. ISTR has several means to accomplish their mission of education, collaboration, and research. They have an affiliated journal: VOLUNTAS, the International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations. They also have an affiliated book series, regional conferences, and active affinity groups where those that specialize in voluntary sector law or another subfield can network and share research. However, one of the main events is the biennial International Conference. After two attempts to host their biennial conference in Montreal, Canada, the ISTR successfully convened the 15th International Conference as an in-person and hybrid event on 12-15 of July 2022.

The types of actors involved in transnational advocacy have diversified. Northern NGOs have lost power and influence and been restricted in their access to southern states. Southern NGOs have developed a capacity to undertake advocacy on their own and often built closer relationships with their own governments. International institutions have become more open to southern NGOs and more skeptical of southern NGOs' claims to speak for southern populations. The result is that the boomerang theory, although still useful, no longer provides the broad explanation for advocacy. A wealth of recent articles (many by contributors to this volume) showed a growing scholarly recognition of the need for new theory. For a long time, volunteering lacked standardized data sets allowing methodologically robust comparative analyses and global policy making. Starting from 2011, the International Labour Office (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) have provided global statistical standards for organization-based and direct volunteering which offer path-breaking opportunities. The global statistical standards on volunteering are however only relatively known. They also have to face difficult methodological and substantial challenges: Can they really account for the local varieties of volunteering in the different areas of the world? Does their adoption further develop our knowledge of volunteering both at national and international level? Beyond illustrating which innovations these statistical standards bring and critically assessing the tensions between the global guidelines and the local differences, the book shows how the ILO and the UN standards can be implemented into national statistics and which advancements in the understanding of characters, antecedents and impacts of contemporary organization-based and direct volunteering they allow. The Volume takes Italy as an illustrative case that offers global value. This multidisciplinary book demonstrates that a holistic approach to the implementation of the ILO and UN guidelines permits to virtuously balance international statistical standards and locally embedded cultures as well as to move knowledge of volunteering forward in a complexity-driven agenda.
