This award-winning study traces the shifting relations between Israel, Iran, and the U.S. since 1948—including secret alliances and treacherous acts. Vitriolic exchanges between the leaders of Iran and Israel are a disturbingly common feature of the news cycle. But the real roots of their enmity mystify Washington policymakers, leaving no promising pathways to stability. In Treacherous Alliance, U.S. foreign policy expert Trita Parsi untangles to complex and often duplicitous relationship among Israel, Iran, and the United States from 1948 to the present. In the process, he reveals shocking details of unsavory political maneuverings that have undermined Middle Eastern peace and disrupted U.S. foreign policy initiatives in the region. Parsi draws on his unique access to senior American, Iranian, and Israeli decision makers to present behind-the-scenes revelations that will surprise even the most knowledgeable readers: Iran’s prime minister asks Israel to assassinate Khomeini; Israel reaches out to Saddam Hussein after the Gulf War; the United States foils Iran’s plan to withdraw support from Hamas and Hezbollah; and more. Treacherous Alliance not only revises our understanding of the recent past, it also spells out a course for the future. `When certain Jews say to Arabs: "Look what we`ve done for you, we found a desert here and transformed it into a garden," the Arab replies, with good reason: "This may be true, but it was my desert and now it has become your garden."....That is why I say the Arabs must leave Israel....I want to make life difficult for them. I want them to say to themselves: it doesn`t make any sense to go on living here.` --Rabbi Meir Kahane The far right is now a force to be reckoned with in Israel. A plethora of groups -Kach, Tehiya, Morasha, Gush Emunim- advocate the gaol of a Greater Israel and the brutal repression of the Palestinians. These groups represent a growing threat not only to Middle East peace, but to the established political order in Israel itself. Raphael Mergui and Philippe Simonnot talk to the leaders of the far right about their aims and methods, their attitudes towards religion and the state. In an extended interview, Meir Kahane-former FBI agent, co-founder of the Jewish Defence League and founder of the extreme -right Kach movement in Israel- argues that the Jewish state cannot be democratic, secular and multi-racial, and that the Arabs should be expelled from Israel and the Occupied Territories. Such men are no longer part of a lunatic fringe. They are gaining increasing respectability and a mass following. They are Israel`s ayatollahs.

Understanding the foreign policy agenda and behavior of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a critical challenge for the world. But where do the principal Iranian regime actors come from in terms of political background, experiences and interests? Which types of ambitions or policy conflicts have dominated and shaped foreign policy debates since 1979? This book explains the internal policy process in Tehran by following two regime personalities, Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who before his death in January 2017 held some of the most powerful political positions in Iran. No two men have been more influential in dictating the regime's decision-making processes since 1979. Yet little is known about how their competing worldviews and interests, their key moments of dispute – both personal or policy-based – or their personal ambitions have informed the trajectory of Iranian politics. The book analyzes Khamenei and Rafsanjani's own words and writings - and accounts of them given by others - to reveal how the domestic policy contest has shaped Tehran's actions on the regional and international stage. Comprising primary and secondary Iranian sources - including untapped memoirs, newspaper reports, and Iranian electronic media and personal interviews - the book highlights the principal rivalries over the lifespan of the Islamic Republic and offers new insights into the present and future of Iranian foreign policy.

Hooman Majd offers a dramatic perspective on a country with global ambitions, an elaborate political culture, and enormous implications for world peace. Drawing on privileged access to the Iranian power elite, Majd argues that despite the violence of the disputed 2009 elections, a group of influential ayatollahs--including a liberal, almost-secular opposition--still believes in the Iranian republic; for them, "green" represents not a revolution but a civil rights movement, pushing the country inexorably toward democracy, albeit a particular brand of "Islamic democracy." With witty, candid, and intelligent reporting, Majd, himself the grandson of an esteemed ayatollah, introduces top-level politicians and clerics as well as ordinary people (even Jewish community leaders), all expressing pride for their ancient heritage and fierce independence from the West.--From publisher description

For over a quarter century, Iran has been one of America's chief nemeses. Ever since Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah in 1979, the relationship between the two nations has been antagonistic: revolutionary guards chanting against the Great Satan, Bush fulminating against the Axis of Evil, Iranian support for Hezbollah, and President Ahmadinejad blaming the U.S. for the world's ills. The unending war of words suggests an intractable divide between Iran and the West, one that may very well lead to a shooting war in the near future. But as Ray Takeyh shows in this accessible and authoritative history of Iran's relations with the world since the revolution, behind the famous personalities and extremist slogans is a nation that is far more pragmatic--and complex--than many in the West have been led to believe. Takeyh explodes many of our simplistic myths of Iran as an intransigently Islamist foe of the West. Tracing the course of Iranian policy since the 1979 revolution, Takeyh identifies four distinct periods: the revolutionary era of the 1980s, the tempered gradualism following the death of Khomeini and the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1989, the "reformist" period from 1997-2005 under President Khatami, and the shift toward confrontation and radicalism since the election of President Ahmadinejad in 2005. Takeyh shows that three powerful forces--Islamism, pragmatism, and great power pretensions--have competed in each of these periods, and that Iran's often paradoxical policies are in reality a series of compromises between the hardliners and the moderates, often with wild oscillations between pragmatism and ideological dogmatism. The U.S.'s task, Takeyh argues, is to find strategies that address Iran's objectionable behavior without demonizing this key player in an increasingly vital and volatile region. With its clear-sighted grasp of both nuance and historical sweep, Guardians of the Revolution will stand as the standard work on this controversial--and central--actor in world politics for years to come.

It's not as if Israel has had many friends in the world during its 4,5oo years of existence. You could count them on the fingers of one hand. The first was Cyrus the Great, king of Iran. The second was the Spartans. The third was Stalin. The fourth was LBJ. In just a year and a half Trump has established himself as perhaps the best friend Israel has ever had. Ivanka, who is Jewish, can be very proud of her father. We thought there was no way we would not find ourselves in a gigantic war with Iran in which the death toll could have reached 500,000, the same as in Syria. That would have been a direct result of the abominable deal that Obama struck with Iran. Trump cancelled it. Iran is now back on its heels. It doesn't mean with 120,000 missiles aimed at us in Lebanon, 80,000 troops in Syria, and tens of thousands of ballistic missiles, Iran still won't go for it. But Trump crippled their economy. And they won't have the bomb in a few years that Obama gifted them. If you are a Trump fan you may like this book. If not, you should pass. Did I tell you he moved the US embassy to Jerusalem? For that alone he won the eternal gratitude of Israel.
