Author: Bilal Philips & Jameelah Jones Publisher: International Islamic Publishing House; IIPH (Saudi Arabia) Pages: 100 Binding: Paperback Reviews "Polygamy is the Muslim practice most frequently and severely maligned by Westerners and modernist Muslims. This book can be read with profit by all unprejudiced readers who wish to know its justification and rationale. One of the greatest contrasts between Islam and the West is their conflicting concepts of relations between the sexes. Indeed, the very first question a Muslim convert is confronted with by an American or European is 'Why does Islam allow four wives?' This book...replies straightforwardly to that question and much more. The authors describe all the most important characteristics of marriage in Islam, pointing out that the Western notions of sex equality and romantic premarital 'love' are not necessary in Islamic marriage based on piety and the commitment on the part of both parents to win the pleasure of Almighty Allah." The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria are exceptional for the copresence among them of three religious traditions: Islam, Christianity, and the indigenous orisa religion. In this comparative study, at once historical and anthropological, Peel explores the intertwined character of the three religions and the dense imbrication of religion in all aspects of Yoruba history up to the present. For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. However, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity but also exported their own orisa religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Europe and the Americas, tens of thousands were sold as slaves in the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa. Peel offers deep insight into important contemporary themes such as religious conversion, new religious movements, relations between world religions, the conditions of religious violence, the transnational flows of contemporary religion, and the interplay between tradition and the demands of an ever-changing present. In the process, he makes a major theoretical contribution to the anthropology of world religions.

Can I be half Muslim and half Christian? Is the Bible like the Qur'an? Do Muslims believe in Jesus? Have you ever tried to explain religion to a child? What if that child had parents of different religions? Author Christine Chapman found herself in this position in discussions with her young grandchildren. Many texts explain religions as separate to each other but children these days have to try to make sense of religion in the context of multi-faith parentage or community. How do they distinguish between theology and culture, fact from family emotions? She set about researching and writing just such a text, adding illustrations on every page. She explores views on family life and marriage, dress and diet, prayer and festivals while explaining the beliefs of Muslims and Christians to children in a non-partisan, fact-based way. Her focus is on the need for understanding and friendship between members of both religions. Armed with this kind of understanding and knowledge she hopes and prays that the next generation may grow up to more peaceful times than ours.

Over 1,400 years ago, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad gave way to a community of followers who have since grown to the second-largest religion in the world today. The word "Islam" itself means "submission," and Muslims are those who submit themselves to the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran. Abounding with images and informative sidebars, this elementary-level text introduces readers to the primary beliefs and practices of a widely misunderstood religion, including the role of prayer, Mecca, and holidays such as Ramadan. In addition to its history, there is a spread dedicated to the important role of Muslim-Americans in U.S. society.

The three essays in this volume give a graphic account of Indian Muslim festivals in the nineteeth century, as observed by the participants themselves. The majority of these participants were Hindus who added their own practices to these supposedly Islamic events. The French Indologist de Tassy adds his own pungent comments to those of his sources, thus providing in this volume a fascinating interplay of cultural perspectives. This is the first translation into English of this classic nineteenth-century French work.
