Excerpt from Ironwork, Vol. 2: Being a Continuation of the First Handbook, and Comprising From the Close of the Mediaeval Period to the End of the Eighteenth Century, Excluding English Work All that science and technical education can do to advance the smith is being taught, but no succinct account of the develop ment, bearings, and possibilities of smithcraft, as an art, has been written. The mutual in uences of different art-centres upon each other, and the inter-relations of the smithcraft of different countries, have not been traced; neither has any serious analysis of the characteristics which distinguish the ironwork of each country at different periods been hitherto attempted. The large amount of research required for such a work has doubtless deterred any competent writer from undertaking it. The four years that have elapsed since the first part was written, have in fact, scarcely sufficed to collect the data for the present slight pioneer work, which it is hoped, however, may suffice to lay before the black smith, his employers, and teachers, so much as it is essential they should have at command, if their craft is to keep abreast of such fellow-crafts as the gold and silver smiths', potters', cabinet makers', or weavers'. Grumman aircraft have been in every major conflict from the Second World War through Korea and Vietnam to the Gulf and Bosnia. Their factory in Bethpage, Long Island, New York, (affectionately known as the 'Ironworks') produced some of the best carrier-borne aircraft ever made including the TBM Avenger (most successful torpedo bomber of all time), the Hellcat and Wildcat as well as the F-14 Tomcat and A-6 Intruder. Grumman-built Lunar Modules were used in the Apollo space missions and successfully landed men on the moon. Bath Iron Works was established by Gen. Thomas Hyde in 1884 and launched its first ship in 1891. This collection of shipbuilding photographs brings to life the proud history of Bath Iron Works. Since then, the shipyard on the Kennebec River has built dozens of luxurious yachts, hardworking freighters, tugs, trawlers, lightships, and more than two hundred twenty warships for the U.S. Navy. Today, Bath Iron Works continues a shipbuilding tradition that began nearly four hundred years ago when the first ship built in America was constructed just a few miles downriver from Bath. Bath Iron Works showcases a unique collection of photographs that provides a rare view inside one of the nation's great shipyards. The book shows the yard's origins in a few simple buildings, its expansion into a modern shipbuilding facility, and its rapid growth into an industrial powerhouse during World War II. During these years, Bath Iron Works produced famous ships such as the America's Cup defender Ranger, the yachts Aras and Hi-Esmaro, the record-setting destroyer USS Lamson, and fully one fourth of all destroyers built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Bath Iron Works gives an insider's view of these great vessels and many others, as skilled craftspeople turn raw materials into complex ships, each uniquely suited to its purpose.

Artists have made gates and fences in wrought iron over the centuries in ornamental designs shown here in hundreds of photos. The restoration of wrought iron is discussed and ironwork examples are organized according to their uses, such as gratings that protect doors and windows, entries and gates from Europe in the Middle Ages, artistic creations of the 17th and 18th centuries, and works of our own day.
