Excerpt from Introductory Lecture, Delivered at the Hahnemann Medical College, of Philadelphia The Arab school made no progress in anatomy and physiology, - rather retrograding. Medicine and surgery found their way gradually into the monasteries of Christendom, and each cathedral had its hospital and botanical garden. Both Mohammedan and Christian hospitals were sustained by the offerings of the wealthy, who sought thus to expiate their crimes. Before the end of the twelfth century, the profession of medicine and the church had become one, so far as Christendom was concerned. But now they were divorced by the council of Montpellier. The ascendancy of ecclesias tical influence was, however, in no wise relaxed - and medical practitioners were little else than another order of priests. The popes founded universities upon the pre-existing episcopal schools, and the majority of the present European Universities had such an origin. Excerpt from History of Anatomy: Introductory Address Delivered at the Opening of the 45th Session of the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia The old college building, which for nearly forty years had been the home of your Alma Mater, and from which had been sent forth nearly graduates, was small, dilapidated, and in every way unfit for a modern medical college. Its lecture rooms were badly lighted and worse ventilated the seats were uncomfortable, the halls narrow and the stairs steep and winding. The laboratories were small, badly equipped and scarcely deserving the name. The hospital, in the rear, with but about twenty-five beds, was equally unfit for its purposes, and of but little credit to the college or the profession. Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to Course at Hahnemann College, Philadelphia, 1867-8 A famous much talked of symptom is the fanlike motion of the wings of the nose in Lycopodium. This one symptom basa literature, such quarrels arose about it. It should never be forgotten that the real symptom of Lycopodium is not a fanlike but a Spasmodic motion of the nostrils, and it corresponds with a dozen of others of this drug, as we will see in the lectures. If the other symptoms of the case do not correspond with Lycopodium, and it is given according to this one single symptom, it will either not make a cure of the case, or the cure will be merely an accidental one. It also no longer stands as a unicum. Since Gross ascertained, in asthma, Ferrum has the same as a characteristic. And how could it? The fanlike motion is a symptom in all diseases with difficult breathing, and we cannot expect to cure'all by Lycopodium. In short, a symptom that is found in one Of our drugs and in no other, never is a characteristic because it is a unicum every day we may find the very same in another, and on the other hand, it may be a very good genuine symptom and a unicum, still very far from being a real characteristic. There are a great many more such peculiarities of a very different value; further observations only can decide. Excerpt from The Claims of Literary Culture: An Address Introductory to the Preliminary Course in the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia; Delivered September Twenty-Seventh, 1875 The dramas of Shakespeare mirror not only his own great age, but universal humanity in all ages. And so wonderful is the knowledge which they exhibit, of na ture and of human life, and of the secret springs of individual being, that their authorship has been hotly disputed by this iconoclastic and analytic age. They who have most strongly questioned their authorship, have been unable to understand how a man who had not gone through, or been driven through, the currie ulum of Oxford or Cambridge, who had received little or no scholastic training of any kind, could have written plays that have been the wonder and admiration of the world; and they have looked around for the real au thor that has been deprived of his just honors, and (a most significant fact!) have settled upon the greatest analytic mind of the age, Francis Bacon, the Father of Experimental Philosophy, as the author of dramas that must have been the product of the most synthetic of human minds, - of a mind that took in everything that was presented to it, organized and complete.
