Investigating both feminism and theology, Colker, a law professor at Tulane University, describes her moral and intellectual odyssey towards a moderate pro-choice position on abortion. Though the book, which includes close analyses of several importantcases, often recalls the dry style of a law review, Colker thoughtfully argues that the right to abortion would be better premised on guarantees of equal protection than on the right to privacy. She looks at case studies regarding sexual activity, contraception and abortion and suggests that ``a coercive social environment'' prevents women from making real choices and thus deprives them of the power to control their reproductive lives. However, in the Roe v. Wade abortion case, the state refused to acknowledge women's interest in protecting their health and well-being while the plaintiff refused to acknowledge the state's interest in protecting fetal life. Colker laments that neither side in the recent Webster case acknowledged these issues and thus hampered good-faith dialogue on abortion. Representing Abortion analyses how artists, writers, performers, and activists make abortion visible, audible, and palpable within contexts dominated by anti-abortion imagery centred on the fetus and the erasure of the pregnant person, challenging the polarisation of conversations about abortion. This book illuminates the manifold ways that abortion is depicted and narrated by artists, performers, clinicians, writers, and activists. This representational work offers nuanced and complex understandings of abortion, personally and politically. Analyses of such representations are urgently needed as access to abortion is diminished and anti-abortion representations of the fetus continue to dominate the cultural horizon for thinking about abortion. Expanding the frame of reference for understanding abortion beyond the anti-abortion use of the fetal image, contributors to this collection push beyond narrow abstractions to examine representations of the experience and procedure of abortion within grounded histories, politics, and social contexts. The collection is organized into sections around seeing (and not seeing) abortion; fetal materiality; abortion storytelling and memoir; and representations for new arguments. These themes cover a range of topics including abortion visibility, anti-abortion discourse, pro-choice engagements with the fetus, personal experience and media representations. But what is meant by 'conscience'? There is hardly a notion as widely used and at the same time as controversial as that of conscience. In the history of ethics we can distinguish several trends in the interpretation of the concept and function of conscience. The Greeks used the word O"uvEt81lm~ to denote a kind of 'accompa nying knowledge' that mostly referred to negatively experienced behavior. In Latin, the expression conscientia meant a knowing together pointing beyond the individual consciousness to the common knowledge of other people. In the Bible, especially in the New Testament, O"uvEt81l0"t~ is used for the guiding con sciousness of the morality of one's own action.
