DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis report identifies governmental actions that can lead to effective management of coastal resources and strenghtening the national capacity for effective coastal resources management through Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). This is a system for controlling development and other human activities that effect the condition of economic resources and the quality of environment in coastal zones. The overall objective of ICZM is to provide for sustainable use of coastal natural resources and for maintenance of biodiversity. Environmentally planned development is reputed to add to economic and social prosperity of a coastal community in the long term. The orientation of the report is toward developing countries, particularly those of the coastal tropics. Fisheries productivity, increased tourism revenus, sustained mangrove forestry, and security from natrual hazard devastation are among the practical benefits of ICZM. ICZM incorporates modern principles of planning and resources management, intensive information bases an interdisciplinary processes. A major objective is to facilitate the interactions of different coastal economic sectors (e.g., shipping, agriculturte, fisheries) toward potimal socio-econopmic outcomes, including resolution of conflicts between sectors. ICZM may be initiated in response to a planning mandate but more often because of a crisis - a use conflict, a severe decline in a resource, or a devasting experience with natural hazards.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKby Elisabeth Mann Borgese Founder and Honorary President International Ocean Institute Adalberto Vallega has been, for decades, a master and great teacher of integrated coastal management and Mediterranean cooperation. This new book, of an almost en cyclopaedic scope, is a most original contribution to the rapidly growing literature on the subject, of equal value to the academic community which will greatly appreciate the theoretical, historic and philosophical underpinning of the work, and to the practi tioner, the planner, regulator and manager, who will find in these pages most useful "checklists" for his duties and responsibilities. Vallega perceives the need for Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM) in the broader context of the ongoing third industrial revolution, which he calls the trans-industrial stage, in its interaction with climate change. There have been profound changes in the economies of the industrialized coun tries. The development of the new High Technologies, including micro-electronics, genetic engineering, new materials, has accelerated the transition from an economic system based primarily on production to one based very largely on services. This, in turn, has facilitated "globalization" of production systems and services, including the financial system, as well as the migration of people The ongoing global "Great Peo ple's Migration" is, generally, from the hinterland to the coasts where, already today, over 60 percent of the human population resides, exercising unprecedented pressures on the coastal and marine environment. Clearly, this justifies the current emphasis, at global, regional and national levels, on the need for coastal management.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKClose to one-half of all Americans live in coastal counties. The resulting flood of wastewater, stormwater, and pollutants discharged into coastal waters is a major concern. This book offers a well-delineated approach to integrated coastal management beginning with wastewater and stormwater control. The committee presents an overview of current management practices and problems. The core of the volume is a detailed model for integrated coastal management, offering basic principles and methods, a direction for moving from general concerns to day-to-day activities, specific steps from goal setting through monitoring performance, and a base of scientific and technical information. Success stories from the Chesapeake and Santa Monica bays are included. The volume discusses potential barriers to integrated coastal management and how they may be overcome and suggests steps for introducing this concept into current programs and legislation. This practical volume will be important to anyone concerned about management of coastal waters: policymakers, resource and municipal managers, environmental professionals, concerned community groups, and researchers, as well as faculty and students in environmental studies.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIntegrated Coastal Management in the Japanese Satoumi: Restoring Estuaries and Bays provides an in-depth exploration of the integrated costal management (ICM) used in the Japanese Satoumi. The lessons of Satoumi?coastal areas where biological productivity and biodiversity have increased through human interaction?are important for the rest of the world, given the political consensus reached in Japan to truly restore estuaries and bays. The book will discuss and explain how this method could be modified to apply to other cultures in the world. Integrated Coastal Management in the Japanese Satoumi: Restoring Estuaries and Bays presents chapters from experts in the relevant fields and includes chapters about each study field of the Satoumi, making it a valuable resource for researchers, field practitioners, and policymakers in coastal area management and development. This includes the Shizukawa Bay as an open coastal sea, the Seto Inland Sea as semi-enclosed coastal sea, and the Japan Sea. The book moves on to explore the economic evaluation of ecosystem services, a four-step management system, and the negotiation between marine protected areas and fisheries, and concludes with a full section covering a comparison of ICM with Europe and the United States, and how Japan’s policies could be integrated. Introduces a four-step system of local, regional, national and international management for successfully Integrated Coastal Management that can be deployed globally Presents a new concept for ICM which worked on the Satoumi Includes both Ecosystems Based Management (EBM) and Community Based Management (CBM) Proposes a common platform for ICM, clarifying the scientific topics involved and their significance regarding the environment

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book informs environmental planning professionals, students and those interested in oceans and coasts from an environmental perspective about what is needed for planning and management of these unique environments. It is comprised of twelve chapters organized in three parts. Part I highlights the basics tenets of environmental planning for oceans and coasts including important concepts from the general field of planning and coastal and ocean management (e.g., hydrography, oceans policy and law, geomorphology). Environmental problems inherent within oceans and coasts (such as sea level rise, marine pollution, overdevelopment, etc.) are also addressed, especially those at the land–sea interface. Part II covers those methodological approaches regularly used by planners working to improve environmental quality and conditions of oceans and coasts among them: integrated planning and management, ecosystem services, pollution prevention, and marine spatial planning. Part III focuses specifically on state-of-the-art tools and technologies employed by planners for marine and coastal protection. These include systematic conservation planning for protected areas, decision support tools, coastal adaptation techniques and various types of communication, including visualization, narration and tools for stakeholder participation. The final chapter in the book reviews the most important concepts covered throughout book and emphasizes the important role that environmental planners have to play in the protection and well-being of oceans and coasts. Michael K. Orbach, of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, penned the book's foreword.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book contains most of the papers presented at the 7th International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions . The conference provides a forum for the discussion of problems that are related to coastal regions, which are increasingly being affected by population growth and industrial and tourism activities. The pressure of these developments generates social, ecological and economic problems, the solution of which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Effective strategies for the management of coastal areas should therefore consist of dynamic and integrated solutions in order to control their environmental quality. The contributions included in this book are listed in the following sections: Ecology and the Coastal Environment; Coastal Deterioration; Management of Risk; Water Quality Issues; Sediment Transport; Coastal Dunes
