Aiming at a uniform relational treatment of data items which are related to various aspects in manufacturing, this research emphasizes convenient facilities for defining relational data schemes, manipulating relational data, and incorporating with application uses. To facilitate the definition of data scheme, the generic relational model is utilized to more faithfully catch different levels of data abstraction. The design of the generic relational model is eased by a syntactic approach. Also, to support such a database, a query language based on SEQUEL has been modified and is now being implemented. By a systematic database design methodology and a powerful query language, data ranging from geometric description to machinability can be represented as flat relational tables rather than files or trees with pointers.

This book presents a unified collection of concepts, tools, and techniques that constitute the most important technology available today for the design and implementation of information systems. The framework adopted for this integration goal is the one offered by the relational model of data, its applica tions, and implementations in multiuser and distributed environments. The topics presented in the book include conceptual modeling of application environments using the relational model, formal properties of that model, and tools such as relational languages which go with it, techniques for the logical and physical design of relational database systems and their imple mentations. The book attempts to develop an integrated methodology for addressing all these issues on the basis of the relational approach and various research and practical developments related to that approach. This book is the only one available today that presents such an inte gration. The diversity of approaches to data models, to logical and physical database design, to database application programming, and to use and imple mentation of database systems calls for a common framework for all of them. It has become difficult to study modern database technology with out such a unified approach to a diversity of results developed during the vigorous growth of the database area in recent years, let alone to teach a course on the subject.

As the information contained in databases has become a critical resource in organizations, efficient access to that information and the ability to share it among different users and across different systems has become an urgent need. The interoperability of heterogeneous database systems-literally, the ability to access information between or among differing types of databases, is the topic of this timely book. In the last two decades, tremendous improvements in tools and technologies have resulted in new products that provide distributed data processing capabilities. This book describes these tools and emerging technologies, explaining the essential concepts behind the topics but focusing on practical applications. Selected products are discussed to illustrate the characteristics of the different technologies. This is an ideal source for anyone who needs a broad perspective on heterogeneous database integration and related technologies.

Abstract: "This paper presents a specific approach of integrating a relational database system into a federated database system. The underlying database integration process consist [sic] of three steps: first, the external database systems have to be connected to the integrated database system environment and the external data models have to be mapped into a canonical data model. This step is often called syntactic transformation including structural enrichment and leads to component schemas for each external DBMS. Second, the resulting schemas from the first step are used to construct export schemas which are then integrated into global, individual schemas or views.
