DOWNLOAD EBOOKWhen it is desired to measure the frequency of RF pulses to within a resolution comparable to the pulse spectral width, special techniques must be adopted. Double detection is such a method. The report presents a simplified mathematical model of the double detection frequency measurement technique. Both frequency and time domain (through the use of an FFT routine) responses of the two individual filters are considered along with the difference of the squares of the time domain responses. Good agreement between theory and experiment is shown. The model includes gating and thresholding and the effects of these parameters are investigated. A complete computer program description, listing, and test case are given. This model can be used to optimize the parameters of a double-detection system. Finally, the model has been used to evaluate the double detection performance of a variety of filter responses including Butterworth, flat exponential filter, brick wall, Kaiser truncated sinx/x, Hamming, and Gaussian.
