Side with the English? Never! The sibling rivalry between brothers Pierre and Jan Rousseau escalates when the Smuts Government declares war on Nazi Germany. Pierre, the charming extrovert, chooses the more glamorous option, heading Up North with the Air Force but his equally good-looking rightwing brother Jan joins the militant wing of the Ossewa Brandwag. The story tracks their adventures during the conflict, reaching a climax when Pierre survives a spell on the loose in Italy and returns home. It portrays the deep division World War II created between groups and individuals in South Africa and the life-changing impact it had on many lives. Youll be fascinated as you follow the brothers hairy and often romantic adventures. I enjoyed being reminded of the complex nature of war and especially the disastrous consequences of limited access to information had for the world at large. Its hard to imagine in this day and age of tweeting and instant messaging that there were times when people sincerely didnt know the truth before it was too late. (Wir haben nicht gewusst!) The New York Times Bestseller What if everything you think you know about addiction is wrong? Johann Hari's journey into the heart of the war on drugs led him to ask this question--and to write the book that gave rise to his viral TED talk, viewed more than 62 million times, and inspired the feature film The United States vs. Billie Holiday and the documentary series The Fix. One of Johann Hari's earliest memories is of trying to wake up one of his relatives and not being able to. As he grew older, he realized he had addiction in his family. Confused, not knowing what to do, he set out and traveled over 30,000 miles over three years to discover what really causes addiction--and what really solves it. He uncovered a range of remarkable human stories--of how the war on drugs began with Billie Holiday, the great jazz singer, being stalked and killed by a racist policeman; of the scientist who discovered the surprising key to addiction; and of the countries that ended their own war on drugs--with extraordinary results. Chasing the Scream is the story of a life-changing journey that transformed the addiction debate internationally--and showed the world that the opposite of addiction is connection.

The Tenth Prayer tells the story of Israel in its early days. The book follows half a dozen people from the 1930s through 1960 and focuses on one theme: "Who is a Jew?" That question, which has divided Israel since independence, is raised by a character saying "I want to be a Jew, a Jewish Jew from Palestine." It is raised again by a follower of the Irgun Zvai Leumi who uses "Hebrew" as a nationality. And it is raised again when a whole village of Italian Catholics converts to Judaism during the war and must fight for acceptance as Jews. Finally, it is raised in the death of a baby of an Israeli Jew and an American Baptist, a baby that cannot be buried under Israeli law. Also touched on are civil rights, freedom of the press, the Law of Return, the Eichmann case, and the little Eichmann case (a Zionist leader accused of helping the Germans), which leads to unpunished murder. The novel brings the story only to 1960, but it portrays the new country without the adulation of previous English-language fiction, as might be imagined since the main character is the woman who broadcast as the Voice of Fighting Zion, broadcasting station of the Irgun. Other characters include a kibbutz woman who must leave her settlement because her husband voted for the wrong party, an assimilated American Jew who was active in Peter Bergsons American League for a Free Palestine. One character spends time in a Lebanese concentration camp where this author was the first American hostage in Lebanon.

In this historical, revisionist memoir, Romano offers a son's unique perspective through never-before-published revelations steeped in intimate details of Mussolini's many adulteries; his sense of supremacy and destiny for greatness; his alliance with Hitler; and finally, his detachment from reality. Mussolini is further humanized as a caring family man who encouraged education and wept at his daughter's wedding."--BOOK JACKET.
