While many professional translators believe the ability to translate is a gift that one either has or does not have, Allison Beeby Lonsdale questions this view. In her innovative book, Beeby Lonsdale demonstrates how teachers can guide their students by showing them how insights from communication theory, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and semiotics can illuminate the translation process. Using Spanish to English translation as her example, she presents the basic principles of translation through 29 teaching units, which are prefaced by objectives, tasks, and commentaries for the teacher, and through 48 task sheets, which show how to present the material to students. Published in English.

DID YOUR FRIEND'S LAST ATTEMPT TO LEARN ENGLISH MAKE HIM YELL "AAAAGGGHHH!!!"? Say to him, "Relax Compadre. Help is on its way." This language method helps you teach a Spanish speaking friend, family member, business associate, employee, etc. conversational English quickly, effectively and enjoyably! And this instructional method is now in this expanded and revised second edition which is also available in paperback! A TIME EFFECTIVE, ECONOMICAL WAY TO TEACH ENGLISH Do you know someone who has tried to learn English through adult school or expensive programs but with mediocre success? Would you like to help anyone in these situations master conversational English in a fraction of the time it would take in a classroom? If so, you'll find the Teach English to a Spanish Speaker system gives you all you need to teach English like a master professor! The first book in this series, "How to Teach English to a Spanish Speaker" (Level 1) will instantly prepare you to be a top notch English teacher who can dramatically improve a student's speaking skills in just a few weeks. This well detailed instructional book is complete with 38 conversational lessons filled with teaching tips and reading lessons which complement the conversational lessons. CONTAINS DOZENS OF READING LESSON HOMEWORK SHEETS The reading lessons may be printed out and photocopied (paperback version only) for students to practice reading the text covered in the conversational lessons or to use as homework assignments. STUDENTS MASTER IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONAL GRAMMAR FIRST! This book builds a powerful foundation in the most common grammatical patterns so students can form sentences right away. The student can expect to master the use of is/are/would/can/want/go, etc. through literally hundreds of applications. From there new vocabulary is formed around these commonly used words so students gain skill in speaking. There is no memorization of long boring, scattered lists (such as kitchen words, sport words, hospital words, etc.) and dry, unconnected grammatical rules which leave a student frustrated and helpless when in an English conversational situation. Each lesson contains instructional prompts in bold print which you read to the student. These prompts are in basic Spanish and as the course progresses, they will be given more and more in English so the student becomes immersed in English. You simply read prompts, and the student answers you. If he's right, go on to the next line. If he's not, correct him so he says it correctly. It's as simple as that. If you can't read the basic Spanish prompt, don't worry. Just have the student read it while you cover up the answer on the right side. If the student says the answer correctly, move to the next line. If not, correct him. Then go to the next line. That's all there is to it. "How to Teach English to a Spanish Speaker" explains how to know when to advance your student to the next lesson as well as how to watch for common pronunciation errors common to Spanish speakers. Give your student a success in conversational English well beyond what he thought possible. Start using this book today! (abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.

¿Por qué? 101 Questions about Spanish is for anyone who wants to understand how Spanish really works. Standard textbooks and grammars describe the "what" of Spanish - its vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation - but ¿Por qué? explains the "why". Judy Hochberg draws on linguistic principles, Hispanic culture, and language history to answer questions such as: Why are so many Spanish verbs irregular? - Why does Spanish have different ways to say "you"? - Why is h silent? - Why doesn't Spanish use apostrophes? - Why does Castilian Spanish have the th sound? Packed with information, guidance, and links to further research, ¿Por qué? is an accessible study guide that is suitable for Spanish students, instructors, native speakers, and the general reader. It is a valuable supplementary text for serious students of Spanish at all levels, from beginning to advanced. ¿Por qué? also covers topics usually left to specialized books, including the evolution of Spanish, how children and adults learn Spanish, and the status of languages that co-exist with Spanish, from Catalan to Spanish sign language to the indigenous languages of Latin America.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.
