The NC 4th Cavalry Regiment AKA the 59th Regiment Volunteers -- was formed during August, 1862, in Garysburg, North Carolina. Its companies were from the counties of Anson, New Hanover, Caswell, Hertford, Cabarrus, Bertie, Currituck, Wilson, Cleveland, and Northampton. The 4th Cavalry served under the command of General Robertson, L.S. Baker, James B. Gordon, J. Dearing, Roberts, and Barringer. It skirmished in the Goldsboro-Kinston area of North Carolina, then moved north and joined the Army of Northern Virginia. It appears that the 4th was in Virginia at least as early as June 1, 1863 where they took an active part in the conflicts at Culpeper Court House, Brandy Station, Upperville, Aldie, Fairfield, Hagerstown, Jack's Shops, Wilson's Farm, White Oak Road, and Five Forks. It had about 500 effectives at Gettysburg and surrendered 40 on April 9, 1865. Companies of the 4th Cavalry were from the counties of Anson, New Hanover, Caswell, Hertford, Cabarrus, Bertie, Currituck, Wilson, Cleveland, and Northampton. The South Carolina 4th Cavalry Regiment, also called Rutledge's Regiment of Cavalry and Rutledge's Cavalry, was organized in January, 1863, by consolidating the 10th and 12th Battalions South Carolina Cavalry. Some of these Cavalry companies existed prior to the war as Militia Companies. An earlier date, 16 December 1862, has also been suggested for organization. The South Carolina 4th Cavalry Regiment served in South Carolina for the first part of the war. After Gettysburg they were transferred to Virginia where they participated in the Wilderness Campaign and Petersburg Siege. In April 1862, the Civil War was entering its second year and North Carolina was rallying to supply more troops for the Confederacy. The Partisan Ranger Act, passed by the Confederate Congress on April 21, prompted local leaders to recruit companies of irregular soldiers for service in the Confederate Army. Seven such companies were banded together into a regiment to form the 4th North Carolina Cavalry: a true cross-section of North Carolina, it contained soldiers from the largest urban areas and smallest rural areas from fifteen counties. This history of the 4th North Carolina Cavalry is based largely on primary source material--the official records, letters, diaries and recollections of the soldiers. The 4th North Carolina saw action in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and was a part of General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The roster comprises a large part of the book and provides biographical, genealogical and military information about each soldier.

The 1st North Carolina Cavalry Regiment (1st NC Cav.) held a very honorable and distinguished record during the war. The gallant men of the 1st NC Cav. participated in more than one hundred and sixty engagements during the war, beginning with a skirmish at Hunters Creek, VA., 10 November, 1861 and ending at Appomattox Court House, VA., on the 9 of April, 1865. Although the 1st NC Cavalry was listed among the troops surrendered at Appomattox, it, like other cavalry units of the Army of Northern Virginia, managed to cut its way through the lines and escape, thus avoiding surrender, and disbanded several days later when it became clear that it would be impossible to reach General Joe Johnston's forces in North Carolina. The Georgia 4th Cavalry Regiment (AveryÕs) was formed with eleven companies in January, 1863, using Avery's 23rd Georgia Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. It served for a time with the Conscript Department in Tennessee, then was assigned to J.J. Morrison's, C.C. Crews', and Iverson's Brigade. The regiment participated in the Chickamauga, Knoxville, and Atlanta Campaigns, skirmished in Northern Georgia and East Tennessee, and took part in the defense of Savannah. In January, 1865, the unit was reorganized and called the 12th Cavalry. It went on to fight in the Carolinas and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Research of this unit is complicated by the fact that there was another 4th Cavalry (ClinchÕs). No roster of the 23rd Cavalry Battalion or the 4th Cavalry (AveryÕs) has been found. The records are all filed in the state archive microfilm as the GA 12th Cavalry Regiment.

The 4th Regiment North Carolina State Troops was organized at Camp Hill near Garysburg and Weldon in May of 1861 and accepted into Confederate service in June of '61. It recruited its members in Iredell, Rowan, Wayne, Beaufort, Wilson, and Davie counties. They were sent to Richmond and then on to Manasses Junction, where it was garrisoned with the 27th and 28th Georgia Infantry, and the 49th Regiment Virginia Calvary -- all under the command of Col. The North Carolina 4th Infantry Regiment Senior Reserves was also known as the 73rd Infantry Regiment North Carolina Troops. The 4th Reserves does not appear in the Official Records. The regiment was organized in early 1865 and participated in the Carolina's campaign. It surrendered as part of the Army of TN at Durham Station, Orange Co, NC April 26, 1865. As the name implies, the Senior Reserves were made up of older men and men who were unfit to serve in the regular army. Unlike the militia and "home guards" however, these men were in actual Confederate Service acting primarily as provost guards, railroad guards and operators, and pickets at bridges and forts.The 4th Senior Reserves served as mounted patrol guard for the Northwester North Carolina counties.

The North Carolina 34th Infantry Regiment was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Ashe, Rutherford, Rowan, Lincoln, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, and Montgomery. After serving in the Department of North Carolina, it was sent to Virginia and placed in General Pender's and Scales' Brigade. The 34th was active in the many campaigns of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor and later participated in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the operations around Appomattox.
