Excerpt from Historic Progress and American Democracy: An Address Delivered Before the New-York Historical Society December 16, 1868 I have the honor of addressing the Historical Society in the great Metropolis of the great Republic. These simple words suggest to me so wide a range of thought that you will pardon me if I do not dwell on local details of our history or of any history. I see before me an immense Result, and I would fain grope my way with such lantern as I can provide for myself towards causes whether distant or near.
