DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe study of photon-photon collisions has progressed enormously, stimulated by new data and new calculational tools for QCD. In the future we can expect precise determinations of ..cap alpha../sub s/ and ..lambda../sup ms/ from the ..gamma..*..gamma.. ..-->.. ..pi..° form factor and the photon structure function, as well as detailed checks of QCD, determination of the shape of the hadron distribution amplitudes from ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. H anti H, reconstruction of sigma/sub ..gamma gamma../ from exclusive channels at low W/sub ..gamma gamma../, definitive studies of high p/sub T/ hadron and jet production, and studies of threshold production of charmed systems. Photon-photon collisions, along with radiative decays of the psi and UPSILON, are ideal for the study of multiquark and gluonic resonances. We have emphasized the potential for resonance formation near threshold in virtually every hadronic exclusive channel, including heavy quark states c anti c c anti c, c anti c u anti u, etc. At higher energies SLC, LEP ...) parity-violating electroweak effects and Higgs production due to equivalent Z° and W/sup + -/ beams from e ..-->.. eZ° and e ..-->.. nu W will become important. 44 references.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe phenomenology of hadron and photon reactions at short distances is discussed in terms of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In addition to large P/sub T/ hadron reactions, predictions are reviewed for jet production in two photon collisions, the relation of photon and gluon jet production, hadronic production and color separation, upsilon decay into hadrons and photons, leading particle distributions in low P/sub T/ hadron collisions, discriminants of quark and gluon jets, and the effects of coherence on gluon distributions in hadrons. A number of new experimental tests of QCD are discussed.
