Excerpt from Harmonic Fourth Reader The books of the Natural Course in Music present the study of music as an art. If followed faithfully, they establish a love for music and at the same time cultivate the creative and appreciative faculties. For while they stimulate the aesthetic sense by presenting the finest examples of music for the young, they arouse and cultivate the inventive power by a systematic course of ear and eye training. Music study thus conducted becomes active, stimulating, intellectual. The feelings which are aroused by the singing are not allowed to pass away nu fruitful, but affect the will, which in turn stimulates to action of a highly developing character. Excerpt from Fourth Reader In the teaching, the chief points are the understanding and the appreciation of what is read. The latter, while doubtless the more important, is the more difficult to secure with most pupils. Abun dant supplementary reading of the right kind is probably the greatest help. In addition to this, the teacher's sympathetic interpretation, through oral reading of other literature, is of great importance. In a word, the reader and the teacher will secure the best results if they succeed in repressing pernicious or merely trashy literature, and in awakening and developing a love of good reading. Sixteen-year-old, music- and sound design-obsessed Drea doesn't have friends. She has, as she's often reminded, issues. Drea's mom and a rotating band of psychiatrists have settled on "a touch of Asperger's." Having just moved to the latest in a string of new towns, Drea meets two other outsiders. And Naomi and Justin seem to actually like Drea. The three of them form a band after an impromptu, Portishead-comparison-worthy jam after school. Justin swiftly challenges not only Drea's preference for Poe over Black Lab but also her perceived inability to connect with another person. Justin, against all odds, may even like like Drea. It's obvious that Drea can't hide behind her sound equipment anymore. But just when she's found not one but two true friends, can she stand to lose one of them? Harmonic Feedback is a 2011 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Excerpt from Monroe's New Fourth Reader Elocution is made practical: first, by asking questions which help the children to imagine the different scenes in the lesson; secondly, by requiring pupils to use the tones necessary to indicate the various emotions and situations represented in the reading-matter; thirdly, by gradually evolving the idea of emphasis, so that pupils shall discover for themselves the emphatic words. In addition, the teacher should drill the class on the 'words in the Introduction, that constant practice may insure distinct articulation. Etymology. - Attention is given to analyzing words into root, suffix, and prefix. A few lessons are given for explana tion and practice; then pupils should be required to present words for analysis. The suffixes and prefixes are defined in the Appendix. Grammar is practically considered in exercises which will give the children a knowledge of the parts of speech, and familiarize them by degrees with the variations of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, number, person, etc. No attempt is made to treat of mere technicalities; for the lessons in grammar are not theoretical, but practical. Composition, as introduced in the lower books of the series, is gradually extended in this reader. Exercises in synonyms, and questions upon the reading-lessons are given for slate-work the pupils are required to write in prose the substance of various poems, and, occasionally, an outline of the story in the lesson is given for composition. The Synopsis of the Preparatory Studies will enable teachers to find at once the lesson containing drill upon any subject not perfectly understood. Excerpt from The Educational Music Course: Second Reader In each key these relations are first studied through conjunct rhythmical progressions; afterwards through the principal harmonies of the key, suggesting the harmonic basis upon which melody rests. The earlier exercises and songs are purposely quite simple, for the benefit of such pupils as have not had previous training in music. In the First Reader the commonest accidental - Sharp-four - was employed in its Diatonic character, but in this Reader its Chromatic nature is developed as well.
