My mother-or "Myrt" as she prefers to be called-entered Sunset Manor nursing home in Waverly, Kansas at 100 years old. When asked what she was most proud of in the initial "conversation circle," Myrt claimed, "I once killed a farmer with a pitchfork!" Of course the tale was a complete fabrication . . . but it shut down any further "interrogation!" Outrageous bits like this have kept the staff of Sunset Manor laughing and on their toes. Several of these devoted professionals have told me, "You ought to write a book!" So I did. These stories were initially intended to capture mom's unabashed personality and to acquaint the staff of with their new resident. As dementia has robbed mom of her memory, I wanted to share both the humor of the stories and the challenges of the illness with a wider audience and to raise funds for Sunset Manor, which has been instrumental in Myrt's well-being and longevity. As the staff discovers daily, Myrt still is a unique character at the age of 107!

Edith Mildred Mayne (Mim Egan), born in 1914 in Oatley, Sydney NSW, lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Spanish ‘flu and Covid 19 and in 2021 is still alive at 106. Started as a collection of a short stories of memories of her life, Mim Egan's story is the story of many born in that era. She witnessed the arrival of aeroplanes and cars. She lived before electricity, before telephones in homes and before the radio. There was no running water – only tanks – from which water had to be bucketed. If you needed hot water it had to be heated up in the copper or on the wood stove – and first the fire had to be lit and the water bucketed from the tanks. Mim at aged 4, remembers the soldiers arriving home from WW1 – at the local railway station to meet the soldiers- flags waving; a lot of cheering; A Band playing. When the Spanish flu hit in 1919 – her mother, Edie, acted as a visiting local nurse.

A strange ethereal white entity is stalking her, and she fears it’s the angel of death. Abigail is busy painting a mural for Vicki’s new chocolate shop, and Kate at The Delicious Circle has hired a homeless woman to help her and her husband, Norman, out at the bakery. Harvey has a new friend, a cute baby squirrel he rescues off the side of the road, and names Little Buddy; a ghost of his own who is desperately trying to warn him of something terrible coming. And Glinda, the psychic, also can foresee something cataclysmal heading for them, too. But neither know what the disaster approaching is. So come and revisit them and many more in the foggy, mysterious little town called Spookie. They’re all waiting for you.

For centuries, on prairie grasslands, dusty streets and racing ovals, everyday Montanans participated in the sport of kings. More than a century after horses arrived in the region, Lewis and Clark's Nez Perce guides staged horse races at Traveler's Rest in 1806. In response to hazardous street races, the Montana legislature granted communities authority to ban "immoderate riding or driving." Helena led the way to respectable racing, with Madam Coady's fashion course hosting the first territorial fair in 1868. Soon, leading citizens like Marcus Daly built oval tracks and glitzy grandstands. By 1890, a horse named Bob Wade set a world record for a quarter mile in Butte, a mark that stood until 1958. Horsewoman and historian Brenda Wahler highlights the Big Sky's patrons of the turf and courageous equine champions, including Kentucky Derby winner Spokane.

During the 1885 to 1924 immigration period of plantation laborers from Japan to Hawaii, more than 200,000 Japanese, mostly single men, made the long journey by ship to the Hawaiian Islands. As it became apparent that they would never return to Japan, many of the men sent for brides to join them in their adopted home. More than 20,000 of these “picture brides” immigrated from Japan and Okinawa to Hawaii to marry husbands whom they knew only through photographs exchanged between them or their families. Based on Barbara F. Kawakami’s first-hand interviews with sixteen of these women, Picture Bride Stories is a poignant collection that recounts the diverse circumstances that led them to marry strangers, their voyages to Hawaii, the surprises and trials that they encountered upon arriving, and the lives they led upon settling in a strange new land. Many found hardship, yet persevered and endured the difficult conditions of the sugarcane and pineapple plantations for the sake of their children. As they acclimated to a foreign place and forged new relationships, they overcame challenges and eventually prospered in a better life. The stories of the issei women exemplify the importance of friendships and familial networks in coping with poverty and economic security. Although these remarkable women are gone, their legacy lives on in their children, grandchildren, and succeeding generations. In addition to the oral histories—the result of forty years of interviews—the author provides substantial background on marriage customs and labor practices on the plantations.
